Companies like Dow and Monsanto aren’t just big, they’re massive multi-national money machines that exist only for profit with little regard for the health of the world population or the planet. Their track record speaks for itself. Their financial resources make them formidable at the government level and they have managed to take control of the very government agencies that were created to control them.
Additionally, they own many of our congressmen. Yes, I said owned because I don’t know another word that better describes the relationship. These gigantic companies and their subsidiaries have been having their way for decades, creating hybrid crops that are less healthy and require additional herbicides, etc., and lying about it to the farm community, which presently has become an agribusiness arm of these same corporations.
The worst case scenario has been the acceptance of genetically modified crops (GMOs) by our government agencies. Europe has resisted this trend. Unfortunately, almost three quarters of what we eat in this country is tainted by some form of GMO. It will take a huge push from those who have not lost their sanity to oppose this trend, and when that happens the fight will be long and drawn out and full of dirty tricks, but it has already begun.
In a press release dated May 19th, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) called for the following immediate measures to be taken regarding human consumption of GMO foods:
- A moratorium on GMO food; implementation of immediate long term safety testing and labeling of GMO food;
- Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community and the public to avoid GMO foods;
- Physicians to consider the role of GMO foods in their patients’ disease processes; and
- More independent long term scientific studies to begin gathering data to investigate the role of GMO foods on human health.
They point out that multiple animal studies have shown that GMO foods absolutely cause damage to various organ systems in the body. The most common GMO foods in North America are corn, soy, canola, and cottonseed oil. The AAEM’s position paper can be found at The American Academy of Environmental Medicine. The position paper is a scathing indictment of the big GMO corporations. If you have any doubts about the dangers these foods possess for you and your family you absolutely have to go to the website and read the position paper.
I find it interesting that this important position paper from the AAEM didn’t show up in the Kansas City Star or any of the local TV news. These large multi-national mega businesses that control the GMO trend are very rich and powerful, but AAEM’s position paper is like a warning shot, and we can be sure that it has been heard. There will be some big issues that will emerge in the next year or two around factory farming, GMO crops, and big agribusiness. It will look like the implementation of these policies, yet to be announced, are for our benefit. I think you will find that most of them are designed to force us to eat what these massive companies want us to eat, and to put the small independent farmer out of business. I suspect all of this will be done through government agencies that were initially created to protect us from these kinds of actions.
An excellent book describing how GMO foods made their way to our tables is Seeds of Destruction: The Hidden Agenda of Genetic Manipulation.
