This headline from the February 3rd K.C. Star was talking about the side effects of Fosamax, Boniva, and Actonel, some of the most prescribed drugs on the market.
If you are on these drugs beware. These biphosphonates (the class of drugs that these drugs fall under) are dangerous. I warned about these drugs when they first came out, and that warning has proved correct. If you take them long enough, your chances to experience osteonecrosis of the jaw climb to levels of very serious risk. In lay terms, osteonecrosis is jaw rot. Teeth fall out, raw rotting smelly bone is exposed, and it is seldom repairable, creating dental cripples. It’s as bad as it sounds.
The research is still new because these drugs are relatively new. As time passes, more cases are reported and the numbers escalate. Unfortunately, at present, most dentists don’t recognize this condition for what it is, and therefore, it continues to go under reported. The patients under most serious risk are cancer patients who are on large amounts of these drugs to reduce the risk of cancer spreading to bone. The percentage of those patients experiencing jawbone rot is significant.
This headline created a perfect opportunity for me to introduce my next major article, my first on a healthy diet for your family. Dietary protein protects against osteoporosis, in most cases negating the need for biphosphonate drugs, and even acts as protection against cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. You will discover how this works over the next six to twelve months as I explain how your body uses protein, fat, and carbohydrate to produce health or disease.
