Food Allergies People are not always aware that the foods they consume may play a significant role in their physical conditions. The prevalence of food allergies and the number of individuals with associated symptoms has increased dramatically in recent times. Some physicians believe that food allergies are the leading cause of ‘undiagnosed’ symptoms and that sixty percent or more of Americans suffer from the negative reactions to certain foods. The term food allergy can cause confusion because an allergic reaction (or allergy) is traditionally thought of as an immune-mediated reaction to a particular substance (called an antigen) resulting in a set of symptoms such as hives, itching, swelling and sneezing. These sorts of reactions tend to be immediate and are mediated by a specific type of antibody (protein molecules made by certain white blood cells) called IgE. |

food allergies:

Although food allergies can occasionally present
in a manner similar to the ‘classic allergy’ with hives, itching,
and swelling as described above, the majority of ‘food allergies’
are more subtle in their onset and are often delayed up to several days
after ingestion. This delayed type of food allergy is mediated by another
antibody called IgG. It is this reaction of IgG with particular food antigens
which can then be measured and quantified with a blood test. Physical
or emotional trauma, drugs, surgery, immunizations, environmental toxins,
improper digestion, excessive consumption of certain highly allergenic
foods, early weaning with the introduction of cow’s milk and solid
foods to infants at a young age, and the high level of preservatives,
stabilizers, artificial colors, sweeteners, and flavorings now added to
foods are all factors that can lead to the development, expression, and/or
exacerbation of food allergies. We will work closely with you to identify
and treat your food allergies using a combination of metabolic tests,
dietary intervention, and natural therapeutics. |

Toxic Metal Exposure Exposure to heavy metals which have accumulated to toxic levels in the body has been well documented as a cause for a myriad of symptoms—from poor performance in school to severely debilitating symptoms including brain pathology, nerve cell degeneration and many other chronic degenerative conditions. Mercury, a neuro-toxic metal used in dental-fillings, is one of the most common causes of heavy metal toxicity. |

Intestinal Dysbiosis Intestinal flora (bacteria and other microbes) play a major role in immune reactions and nutritional status and can also affect cholesterol metabolism and carcinogenesis. Our bodies have a symbiotic relationship with the bacteria and other microbial forms living in our gastrointestinal tract. A healthy balance of intestinal flora can be dramatically disturbed in cases of selective immunodeficiency, excessive exposure to broad-spectrum antibiotics, over-consumption of foods such as milk & dairy products, refined sugars, as well as mold and yeast-containing foods. An overgrowth of certain strains of intestinal yeast (Candida) or bacteria (Clostridia), which are normally present in lower quantities, can produce or exacerbate symptoms in many health conditions. Restoring the optimal and proper balance of intestinal flora is often overlooked, but is an extremely important part of a treatment plan. |

Other Causes for Illness Most chronic conditions have a multi-factorial etiology including nutritional status, biochemical imbalances, dietary & lifestyle habits, environmental stressors, as well as physical and emotional stressors. The physicians at the Metabolic Center are trained to evaluate the myriad factors that may play a role in your particular health condition and are dedicated to the treatment of the ‘whole’ individual—mind, body, and spirit. |

Biochemical Imbalances The accumulation of an organic acid in cells and body fluids such as urine can lead to organic acidemia or aciduria. Over 1000 different organic acids have been detected in urine using the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method. Laboratory testing will be extensively used in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. |

Clinical Nutrition
Clinical nutrition can be defined as applying dietary intervention and supplementation of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, glandulars, and essential fatty acids - in therapeutic dosages - to treat disease. Many medical conditions can be corrected as effectively with foods and nutritional supplements with fewer resulting complications and side effects than by other means. A growing body of scientific research in this area is reflected in numerous professional, peer-reviewed journals of medicine, nutrition, and dietary sciences, validating the efficacy of diet and nutrition. Our team at The Metabolic Center for the Advancement of Health are experts in their understanding and application of clinical nutrition and dietary intervention and will design a personalized plan for your specific condition. Nutritional biochemist Roger Williams’ formulation of the concept of ‘biochemical individuality’ in 1955 helped give insight into the unique nutritional needs of each individual, how to correct in-born errors of metabolism, and even how to treat specific diseases through the use of nutrient-rich foods or larger dosages of specific nutrients. Linus Pauling, two-time Nobel Prize winner, coined the concept of orthomolecular medicine, and provided further substantiation for the use of nutrients as therapeutic agents. |

Botanical Medicine Herbal
medicines are the most ancient form of health care known to humankind
and have been used in all cultures throughout history. Extensive scientific
documentation now exists concerning their use and effectiveness for a
variety of health conditions from PMS, menopause, indigestion, stress,
anxiety, and ADHD to heart disease, cancer, and HIV.
Today we still rely on the curative properties of plants in about 75%
of our medications. About 500 herbs are still employed within conventional
medicine, although whole plants are rarely used. Often it is the “isolated
constituents” of the herbs that provide the starting material
for the synthesis of conventional drugs. Botanical medicine, unlike
it’s pharmaceutical counterpart, utilizes the whole plant which
reduces or eliminates many of the side effects associated with prescription
medications. The human body is better adapted to treatment with botanical
remedies than with isolated chemical medicines because we have evolved
with plants over thousands of years. Our biochemistry and physiology
is in general geared to digesting and utilizing plant based foods, which
often have medicinal value as well as providing sustenance. The use
of herbal or botanical medicines is experiencing a dramatic renaissance
in our country because the awareness of the side effects associated
with surgery and prescription medications, which is forcing a health
conscious public to look for alternative, safer and more gentle forms
of treatment. Botanical medicines are effective and safe when used in
the right dose, and in proper combinations with other treatments. Each
year a growing body of clinical research is published documenting the
health benefits, safety, and efficacy of these botanical medicines but
like all forms of medicine, botanical remedies must be administered
carefully because a few can produce side effects. The physicians
at The Metabolic Center are highly trained and experienced in the use
of these plant based medicines. |

Environmental Medicine Environmental medicine focuses on evaluating environmental factors influencing our health and behavior. The human body strives to maintain a homeostatic condition with optimal functioning. Toxic chemicals, allergens, physical phenomena, malnutrition, as well as psychological stresses can have a negative impact on our body’s ability to maintain homeostasis. Our goal at the Metabolic Center is to address these often overlooked environmental factors and create a treatment plan that will restore a harmonious balance and optimal function to the major systems of your body like the endocrine, immune, and central/peripheral nervous systems. |

Homeopathy Homeopathy is considered a complete system of natural medicines (also referred to as homeopathic remedies), that can have a therapeutic effect on almost any disease or health condition. The use of homeopathy is inexpensive and non toxic and is used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. It is particularly effective in treating chronic illnesses that fail to respond to conventional treatments and is also a superb method of self-care for minor conditions such as the common cold and flu. Throughout its 200 year history, homeopathy has proven effective in treating illnesses for which conventional medicine has had little to offer. The word homeopathy derives from the Greek work “homoios”, meaning “similar” and pathos, meaning “suffering”. Homeopathic medicines are generally dilutions of natural substances from plants, minerals, and animals. Based on the principle of “like cures like”, these remedies specifically match different symptom patterns or “profiles” of illness and function by stimulating the body’s natural healing response. The FDA recognizes homeopathic remedies as official medications and regulates their manufacturing, labeling, and dispensing. Homeopathic remedies also have their own compendium, the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States, first published in 1897. “Homeopathy has been of tremendous value in reversing diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, bronchial asthma, epilepsy, skin eruptions, allergic conditions, mental or emotional disorders,” states George Vithoulkas, Director of the Athenia School of Homeopathic Medicine in Athens, Greece, and author of The Science of Homeopathy - a definitive book on the science and philosophy behind this form of medicine. According to Vithoulkas, “the long-term benefit of homeopathy to the patient is that it not only alleviates the symptoms but reestablishes internal order at the deepest levels and thereby provides a lasting cure.” We, at The Metabolic Center will draw from our knowledge
of allopathic, naturopathic and homeopathic traditions to choose the combination
most appropriate for your healing. |

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy
(BIOHRT)
There is much confusion over the term “natural” with regards to the use of hormones for conditions like PMS and menopause. Natural hormone replacement therapy (NHRT) means that the chemical compositions of the hormones are biologically identical to those that are produced endogenously within our bodies. In terms of NHRT, these “bio-identical” hormones would include estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), progesterone (P4), DHEA, and testosterone. Although bio-identical hormones have long been utilized in other countries, in the United States NON-bio-identical hormones habe been predominantly used for the last 50 years. There are several reasons for this, but unfortunately, the lack of profitability has been the main reason the availability of these bio-identical hormones has been kept quiet. Since natural hormones cannot be patented, pharmaceutical manufacturers lack financial incentive to fund research and clinical trials, or to commercially market these substances. In addition, most conventionally trained doctors lack training in the application of these natural hormones. As a result of the abrupt cancellation by the NIH (National Institute of Health) of the “Nurse’s Health Study”, which was examining the use of synthetic progestins (Provera) and conjugated equine estrogens (Premarin), the dangers of Premarin and Provera (conventional HRT) have come to light. NIH took five years to deem this therapy unsafe, although these products have been on the market for over 50 years. The NIH budgeted $600 million to fund the complete eight year study which was stopped after only five years due to a determination that the use of these “conventional” hormones for HRT increased the risk of invasive breast cancer. In contrast, bio-identical hormones have been used safely
and effectively for over 50 years by European physicians. These hormones
are almost entirely without side effects and, because they are biochemically
identical to those produced in the body, they maximize all the positive
benefits that endogenous hormones normally contribute to health and well-being.
At The Metabolic Center we are able to evaluate, balance, and optimize
your hormone levels safely and effectively. |
