My Thoughts On A National Cat-astrophy

On Friday, November 23rd, the day after Thanksgiving, the K.C. Star ran a front page story entitled “Among fat cats, diabetes numbers rise.” Interestingly, diabetes among family kitty kats has grown to epidemic proportions, and authorities are arguing about the causes.

Many intelligent veterinarians have known the causes and have been writing about them for years, but the pet food manufacturers have set up The National Pet Food Commission to keep things, and profits, the way they are. Same old same old.

Members of the Commission tell the press that carbs and cats go together just fine. Smart vets know better. What causes cats to be diabetic are the same things that cause our children to become diabetic. Fat! Fat caused by not enough exercise and too many carbohydrates from packaged foods.

When any animal group begins eating outside the boundaries of its normal diet, established by thousands of years of hunting, gathering, etc., illness results. We’ve seen that in our adult and juvenile human populations, and in our domestic and farm animal populations as well. However, please consider this; to eat the flesh of an unhealthy animal while expecting that meal to produce health in us is the epitome of foolishness.

We have been deceived by big business into believing that consuming un-natural and therefore unhealthy foods can produce healthy families and pets. Cats are carnivores, designed by nature to eat protein and fat. We are omnivores, but we consume enormously greater quantities of simple carbohydrates than we were designed to. The beneficiary of all this deceit is the manufacturer and the bottom line.

Have a healthy holiday season, and take a lesson from the kitties and it will be purr-fect.
