Iodine and Fibrocystic Disease
- September 7, 2016
Fibrocystic disease occurs most frequently in the breasts, uterus, and/or ovaries, and it is very common. It affects most women in our society at one time or another. Most fibrocystic disease of the uterus and ovaries is discovered first via gynecological exam, often having produced no symptoms to give a clue to its presence. Those affected by fibrocystic disease of the breast know they have it.
Fibrocystic breast disease is most always first discovered by the patient who is responding to very tender and lumpy breast tissue. Many times this progresses to the point of extreme discomfort and/or pain. A great many women live in fear of breast cancer because of fibrocystic disease, which is a positive risk factor for breast cancer. More women every year allow preventative mastectomies and hysterectomies because of fears of getting cancer from fibrocystic disease. Medicine seems to have few additional answers. Is there anything else that can be done?
In almost every case, fibrocystic disease is curable. Approximately 25 years ago I had the privilege of attending a lecture on a protocol developed by a Dr. John Myers. He had devised an approach for the successful treatment of fibrocystic disease. The first part of his protocol was a basic vitamin program. Today that program would look something like this: NuMedica’s Mens or Womans Multi, 4/day; NuMedica’s Elite-E, 2/day; Douglas Laboratories Vitamin B-6, one a day; Douglas Laboratories Magnesium Aspartate, 4 a day; with the last supplement being Prothera’s Iodine/Iodide, one a day.
The best way to determine a deficiency of iodine is to get a bottle of tincture of iodine from the pharmacist and paint a square on your abdomen about the size of an audiocassette case. If you are deficient in iodine, you will absorb this through the skin in less than 8 hours. When you are no longer deficient your body will cease absorbing it and it will remain for 24 hours. Do not be surprised if the iodine patch is gone very quickly. There is a serious iodine deficiency all across our country, which is especially severe in the mid-west. Some people are allergic/sensitive to iodine and should see an AET practitioner to clear the allergy (if my office in the Kansas City area is not convenient for you, go to the NAET.com website to locate a practitioner near you). About the only side effect from this approach is tender skin. In some individuals, the skin under the iodine application area will become tender or sensitive. If that happens, you simply move the patch to another area or discontinue the treatment for a few days.
When the fibrocystic disease is particularly bad, the application of iodine directly to the breast areas most affected improves results even more, although extra care must be taken not to stain white undergarments. With fibrocystic disease of the uterus and/or ovaries, it helps to paint the iodine patches on the skin directly over the organs. Almost without fail, by the time the iodine patch lasts 24 hours before fading, the fibrocystic disease is gone. Many women have reported back to me that their OB/GYN told them that their uterine and/or ovarian cysts that were bigger than an orange have disappeared.
An additional benefit of this treatment is improved Thyroid function, the main topic of one of our newsletters. It was the increase in the number of calls from that newsletter that prompted this follow up.
The most common comments were those regarding increased energy. It is not unusual when doing the iodine patch test to see a considerable increase in energy because often the Thyroid is marginally under-functioning because of a lack of iodine, and in the presence of the deficient mineral the Thyroid again begins to function optimally.
Still another common comment had to do with weight loss, which takes place sluggishly if at all when the Thyroid is marginally under-functioning. With adequate iodine, and a Thyroid that is working the way it is supposed to, weight loss is much easier to achieve.
Have fun with this test. Check yourself 3 or 4 times a year to be sure your iodine levels are adequate for optimum Thyroid function, and enjoy better health. This is the kind of preventive medicine that keeps you out of the doctor’s office.
Allergies Are On the Rise, Don’t Hesitate To Let Your Friends Know That AET Eliminates Allergies/Sensitivities
- September 7, 2016
The United Kingdom National Health Service recently released a report that showed a sharp rise in the number of people with fatal allergies over a fifteen year period. They claim there is no explanation.
If they would pay attention to the increase in genetically modified foods (thanks Monsanto), they would probably come up with some answers.
They noted that prescriptions for epinephrine injectors (EpiPens) increased 700% in 13 years, and hospital admission increased by a quarter. These statistics parallel those of the USA, and awareness of the cascading allergy problem could save the life of a member of your family.
When I first wrote this newsletter article in 2011, allergy/sensitivity was becoming epidemic. Now in 2016 the epidemic is upon us, and it is worse than we ever projected it to be. Medicine continues to treat allergy/sensitivity with archaic, invasive, painful, and symptom oriented approaches. AET focuses on the cause, is non-invasive, painless, inexpensive, and according to the research over 85% effective. That translates to allergies gone. Why does medicine stick to the old archaic methods? That’s an easy one to answer, if you just follow the money.
FDA Examines Food Dyes & Hyperactivity

FDA Examines Food Dyes and Hyperactivity
The FDA has decided to examine the link between food dyes and hyperactivity in children. How can a government agency get so lost in an age where even automobiles have navigation devices to find a destination?
I sometimes wonder if any of the experts at the FDA are familiar with libraries. I first learned of the Feingold Diet in the seventies at the old Clendening library at KU Medical Center. Ben Feingold, M.D., became famous for a diet that eliminated food dyes and salicylates (aspirin like compounds). Results were mixed, suggesting that hyperactivity and other behaviors now categorized Hyperactive/Attention deficit, etc. are caused by more than just salicylate and food dye sensitivity. Nevertheless, many children and adults obtained relief with the diet. Medicine continued to pursue the One Cause/One Cure approach, and because the Feingold Diet didn’t fix everyone it was paid scant attention by the authorities.
My ‘hyperactive’ patients received decent results when applying the diet and we still check for these sensitivities with the AET protocol and find they are often a culprit. When AET treatment is combined with an intelligent dietary lifestyle, results go from decent to excellent.
Ben Feingold can be googled successfully for more information. I wonder if the FDA has figured out how to google?
Leaky Gut Syndrome, the Villain Behind Allergy/Sensitivity, and How Do You Know If You Have It
- September 6, 2016
Just a few decades ago, scientists discovered an intestinal condition in alcohol abusers that resulted in a porous intestinal lining. They named the condition Leaky Gut Syndrome, or just Leaky Gut for short. This porous intestinal lining, or Leaky Gut, allows food molecules and other substances, that would normally be too large, to pass through the intestinal lining.
Once these abnormally large molecules get through, they trigger a natural defense reaction whereby the body builds antibodies to identify the larger molecule as an invader, and attack it. The result of this antigen/antibody reaction is what we call an allergy/sensitivity, and any tissue in the body can express an allergy/sensitivity.
Once this Leaky Gut Syndrome begins, a cascade of events occurs that results in increasingly more allergy/sensitivities. The body becomes more and more sensitive to not only food chemicals, but to environmental chemicals and airborne irritants such as pollen, dust, and mold. Even though specific nutritional and lifestyle modifying actions can be instituted to heal the Leaky Gut itself, the body still continues to make the antibodies it built in its initial response. Therefore, the body remains sensitive to many dietary, environmental, and airborne chemicals that were not a problem before the Leaky Gut began.
In addition to alcohol abuse, many prescription and non-prescription drugs initiate Leaky Gut. Among the most common are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) like aspirin and ibuprofen, antibiotics, steroids, birth control pills, and vaccinations. Vaccinations can be a problem because many of them are preserved in a mercury solution. Mercury is one of the most toxic chemicals on the planet, and a child’s body can handle just so much before it results in a toxic body burden. The mercury in vaccinations has been implicated by some of the current research as a primary contributor to disorders like ADD/ADHD and Autism. Another initiator of Leaky Gut is silver dental fillings/amalgams that are composed of about 50% mercury. In many people, these amalgams release mercury slowly over the years and result in a chronic poisoning.
It has been theorized that all of the above initiators of Leaky Gut produce the porous gut condition by creating an imbalance between the naturally occurring yeast and bacterial residents (flora) of the intestines. This imbalance in the gut flora is termed Dysbiosis, and it is Dysbiosis that is the actual cause of the porous gut. In Dysbiosis, yeast proliferates, and often migrates from the intestines to the urogenital area, so those who have suffered with urogenital yeast infections are suspect for Leaky Gut Syndrome.
Leaky Gut Syndrome is usually accompanied by sugar craving. Yeast needs sugars, simple carbohydrates, for its food source. When the body is in Dysbiosis, the yeast secretes chemical messengers into the bloodstream that make the individual crave sweets.
It is important to take steps to help heal the damaged intestinal lining. Abstaining from simple sugars in the diet and supplementing the bacterial populations that have been thrown into negative balance usually does this. It’s called probiotic therapy, and consists of taking bacterial agents by mouth in pill or powder form. Probiotics should always be taken during and after antibiotic therapy, vaccinations, etc., to avoid Dysbiosis and the Leaky Cut Syndrome. Douglas Laboratories caries some excellent probiotics, and the preferred probiotic for most patients at my office is the Multi Probiotic 40 Billion. This probiotic can be purchased by clicking on orders and scrolling down to the Douglas Laboratories button on this website, then just click and follow the directions.
Additionally, it is important to reverse the antibody patterns that have been established as a result of the Leaky Gut. This is the role of Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET). Devi Nambudripad, R.N., D.C., L.Ac., Ph.D., M.D., postulated over eighteen years ago that most allergy/sensitivity started in the gut with food allergy/sensitivity and then cascaded into airborne and environmental allergy sensitivities. As more time passes, this theory is proving to be correct in most cases.
AET is remarkably effective. According to some European research, AET treatment results in marked improvement or cure in 80% to 85% of all cases studied, and that is consistent with the results we see in our office. The results seem even more amazing when one considers that the testing and treatment is totally painless and non-invasive.
How do you know if you, or a member of your family, have Leaky Gut? In the office, we have a simple home test that we teach to our pediatric patients. The kids “get it,” and can then talk to Mom when things aren’t right. We call it the “poop test.”
I explain that we can tell a lot about what is going on in someone’s gut by paying attention to what comes out. The ‘poop test’ is simple. These are the four parts, and why they are important.
So there you have it. A great medical test you can use for yourself and teach your kids; a BM a day, no stinkers, no sinkers, and no mess. If you can’t pass the poop test the chances are very good that you have Leaky Gut and have allergies/sensitivities.
Our office has been treating and fixing Leaky Gut Syndrome and the Allergies/Sensitivities that result with AET longer than anyone else in the region and we are just a phone call away (913-432-4477).
Beating Colds and Flu
As a child I had a severe disease called rheumatic fever that could have compromised my immune system for the rest of my life. Afterward, I experienced at least three severe colds a year through my school years and into early adulthood. However, in the last twenty years I have only had one mild cold. If I can do it, you can do it too, and this is how.
First, I take Douglas Laboratories Ascorbplex 1000 every day. This is the most important thing you can do to measurably reduce the number of colds you get and also reduce the severity of the ones you do get. The formula I recommend for C intake is one gram (1000 mg) per day for each fifty pounds of weight. Therefore, a one hundred pound person would take two grams of vitamin C per day.
Vitamin C alone will greatly reduce the number and severity of colds. However, it doesn’t completely eliminate colds. There are times when you get chilled, spend time with someone with a particularly virulent cold, or just get “that feeling” that a cold is coming on. For me, “that feeling” is a feeling of being a little cold and chilled.
It is a particular feeling I associate with the onset of a cold, and I have found that virtually everyone I question can also identify a special “feeling” just before they start to come down with a cold. This is the time to take extra action. If you wait, it will be too late.
Again, I take the Preventics Vitamin C-1000. I like it because it is a 1000mg tablet so I have to take fewer of them. Many of my patients keep a few extra vitamin C tablets at the office, and so do I, so I have some at hand if I get “that feeling” while I’m at the office. If you do this, it is important to remember that vitamin C loses half its’ potency in six months. I make sure my office stash of vitamin C is not more than three months old so I’m assured of full potency.
I start taking extra vitamin C immediately after I get “that feeling.” I begin by taking two or three grams every twenty or thirty minutes. I continue taking C at that level until I feel that the symptoms have subsided, or until I feel gassy, as if I will get diarrhea if I take any more. At that point I’m done taking vitamin C for that day. The next day I stay on that same dosage. I split the amount into four doses and take them with my meals and before bed. After a day or two I begin reducing dosage until I get back to my regular dose. This usually takes about ten days. If you reduce dosage too quickly, symptoms can return and a cold can ensue. During this time I also take Douglas Laboratories Zinc Lozenges. Zinc really aids the immune system, and evidence suggests that bacteria and viruses don’t like it. I usually take three or four of the lozenges a day unless I’m having some throat symptoms, and then I will allow a lozenge to dissolve in my mouth every hour or two until the soreness is gone. I continue the Zinc Lozenges at a dosage of at least three a day until I am able to return my vitamin C levels back to normal.
Lastly, I always keep a bottle of Colloidal Silver, that I get at the Health Food Store, in the pantry for occasions like this because it is such a good antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal agent. As soon as possible I take a tablespoon; thereafter, a teaspoon in the morning and one in the evening for a week. As you may recall from past newsletters, Colloidal silver is useful against most infections and can even be used topically. Many of my patients have used a mild Colloidal Silver solution to heal both childhood Earaches and Pink Eye applying a drop or two to the affected area until symptoms abate.
Many patients who are very susceptible to colds have told me that this program has helped them reduce colds from three or four a year to one every three or four years. That’s a lot of avoided misery.
How Much Vitamin C Is Enough For You And Your Child?
This is a true story.
Approximately 40 years ago, while at a Preventive Medicine meeting in Chicago, I found myself alone in a hospitality suite with Dr. Linus Pauling. Dr. Pauling had been one of my hero’s for a long time, a two time Nobel Prize winner, and at that time, the foremost promoter of high dosage Vitamin C therapy. Our conversation changed the way I have practiced since that fateful meeting.
Dr. Pauling told me a lot that day that I really didn’t want to hear. First he said he thought that Chiropractors got a bad reputation for over treatment because they didn’t address the underlying reason for most spinal subluxations/misalignments. He told me that Connective tissue, ligament and tendon specifically, could not be adequately repaired without really sizeable amounts of Vitamin C being available, and if Vitamin C was administered in adequate amounts, multiple spinal manipulations would seldom be required.
Then Dr. Pauling went on to tell me that virtually all animals make copious amounts of Vitamin C and gave examples. One example sticks in my mind. He said that cats made hundreds of milligrams (mg) a day for every pound of body weight, and that was why they seldom experienced sprains and strains when they fell from high places. He also said that the animals that make the most Vitamin C were the healthiest in the animal kingdom, and those that make the least were among the sickest.
Additionally, he told me that Guinea Pigs, the South American Bubal Bat, some species of New World monkeys, and Humans had lost the ability to make Vitamin C. He claimed that a genetic flaw had apparently occurred millennia ago, and all the machinery to make Vitamin C was present in the Liver except the very last enzyme in the manufacturing chain. I wrote down the name, l-Galunolactone oxidase.
He claimed that one of the reasons that humans were susceptible to so many ills, compared to other animals, was this inability to manufacture Vitamin C. He pointed out that although primates that made Vitamin C didn’t make very much, they did make on the average of 1000 mg of Vitamin C every day for every 50 pounds of body weight. I find it to be amazing, that as the years have passed, the doctors that pursue what orthodoxy calls mega-scorbic practice continue to get the kind of results Dr. Pauling described as possible so many years ago, while the remainder continue to hide their heads in the sand.
He was particularly emphatic about the role Vitamin C played in potentizing the immune system response, and emphasized how it can be used to treat everything from the common cold to ear infections. He talked about how adequate Vitamin C slowed down the aging process, and how it works synergistically with other vitamins like Vitamin E so the body can use the Vitamin E over and over. Lastly, he mentioned the work of Dr. Frederick Klenner, of Reidsville, NC, and the scientific papers and books published on the subject that medicine chose to ignore.
Upon arriving back at my practice, I made it a priority to go to the old Clendening Library at K.U. Medical Center, and after searching through the research literature I learned that Dr. Pauling was right on every single point. I had learned none of this in school, and to this day it isn’t taught in any medical or chiropractic curriculum that I am aware of. If people would take adequate Vitamin C, it would cost the disease care delivery system and the pharmaceutical industry a fortune, and I am convinced that is the reason why the information on Vitamin C isn’t common knowledge.
What can you do to verify this information?
There are still books in print by Frederick Klenner, M.D., in which he shares how he treated everything from poison snake bite to polio with Vitamin C, often by injection. Emanuel Cheraskin, M.D., D.M.D., wrote what some consider the benchmark book on Vitamin C over 15 years ago called The Vitamin C Connection, and it is still available. However, some of the most recent studies are even more amazing, so if you are a KS resident, you can go to the new Archie Dykes library at K.U. Medical Center, on 39th Street, and ask a librarian for help researching Vitamin C for yourself. It’s a State library, so you pay for this service with your taxes. You might also be surprised at how much recent research has been published on Vitamin C, and especially its relationship to cancer, by our very own K.U. Medical Center.
What have I learned about Vitamin C over the last thirty plus years?
Dr. Pauling was right. A good rule of thumb for daily supplemental Vitamin C intake is 1000 mg for every 50 pounds of body weight. This is maintenance dosage, and when supplemental Vitamin C is taken daily, the number of colds and general infections experienced is greatly reduced. I have had numerous patients who said they would always get one or two colds a year, and then go eight or ten years without one once Vitamin C was begun at the recommended dosage level. Supplementing your child on Vitamin C will save a lot of missed school time, and make parenting much easier. It is also a smart habit to start when the children are in their formative years. Neuro-muscular bio feedback (muscle testing) is the most accurate form of testing I have found, and we employ that in the office.
An orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Robert Cathcart, established that the safe upper limit for Vitamin C intake was consistent with diarrhea and/or painful abdominal gas. This he named the “Cathcart point” or “bowel recognition.” His protocol for ear infections, sore throats, etc., is:
You do this until the “Cathcart point,” or “bowel recognition” occurs. At this point you stop for the remainder of the day. The following day you reduce dosage to the previous day’s level. You continue that until “recognition” occurs again, and so on until the child’s condition is stable. If your child is having serious immune challenges, it is wise to call the health help hotline number, 800-888-4866, on Tues., Wed., or Thurs. mornings between 10 and 12 Central Time, and get specific advice from me. The only side effect established for Vitamin C is diarrhea. Naysayers have postulated a connection between Vitamin C and kidney stones, but I have found no citations in the literature verifying this hypothesis, in fact just the opposite.
It is my opinion that all humans should be supplementing with Vitamin C. Before we stopped making that last enzyme in the manufacturing cycle, humans, like other primates, made substantially larger amounts of Vitamin C than recommended by our present RDA.
Which product will be best for your needs?
For the average adult, or child old enough to swallow a larger pill, I recommend Douglas Laboratories Ascorbplex 1000. For the children, I like the Douglas Laboratories Orange Chew. Most children find the Orange Chew has a pleasant taste and take it as if it were a treat.
Cellular Energy Machinery (mitochondria), Aging, and a Strategy for Reversal
As we age, the energy manufacturing organelles of the cell are damaged from exposure to harmful oxidative byproducts of cellular metabolism and from an increasingly toxic external environment.
Dr. Bruce Ames, of the University of California-Berkley, began investigating the problem in the late 1990s, and the results are encouraging. Dr Ames was interviewed in 2011 in Life Extension Magazine, and shared his exciting results.
Apparently, the same combination of antioxidant nutrients that are so important in the treatment of type II diabetes are equally important to stop and reverse oxidative damage at the mitochondrial level.
Acetyl l-Carnitine and Alpha Lipoic acid, when taken together, allow old rats with mitochondrial damage to display healing changes where these mitochondria begin to look more like the mitochondria of younger rats. As a result, the old rats displayed more energy and better memory. Preliminary human trials are suggesting that this combination of antioxidants has the same effect on people.
For those of us who are getting older, that’s very good news.
The Acetyl l-Carnitine & Alpha Lipoic Acid combination can be found under Supplements, and then the NuMedica button. Look for the product, Mitochondrial Recharge. Since Dr. Ames original research, additional research has verified his findings and added substantially to the list of nutrient biochemicals that help improve mitochondrial function. You will find all those nutrients in Mitochondrial Recharge. Mitochondrial Recharge is the product I personally use, and I can tell the difference if I miss a few days. Additionally, the patient feedback on this product is outstanding. I suggest a clinical trial of one bottle, and if you don’t feel a difference your mitochondria don’t need help yet.
I started taking a similar product years ago because the research showed that it helped the liver with its task of detoxification. So, along with being a primary support for type II diabetics and a major player in helping the body deal with a toxic environment, it now also helps rejuvenate the mitochondria, resulting in increased energy and improved memory.
Preventics now carries D-Mannose. A bottle of 100, 300mg capsules sells for $35.00.
Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, Arteriosclerosis, and the Connection to Your Big Toenails
Over thirty five years ago, while doing research for my Master’s thesis in nutrition, I came across some unique research about bones, how they strengthen (re-mineralize/re-model), and how they weaken (de-mineralize). I discovered a simple, no cost, at-home test that could determine whether Osteoporosis was present, and if so, monitor its progress. The scientific evidence suggested that Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, and Arteriosclerosis were all part of the same physiological pattern, and should be mostly reversible. I first put this information in a newsletter over twenty years ago, and with all the horrible side effects of the Biphosphonate medications used for Osteoporosis, I felt it was time to update the information.
Bones as Warehouses
We all know minerals are important to health. In fact they are more important than vitamins. Research on stress and its relationship to disease shows that when a body is under stress, it moves minerals from its mineral warehouses (the bones) and sends them via the circulation to the areas in need.
Minerals are needed in extra abundance when stressful situations call for additional muscular and/or neurological activity, and when a lot of extra energy is required. The body is careful to store the minerals it needs in balance, which results in the maintenance of bone strength and normal bone physiology. In fact, when minerals are being re-incorporated into bone, if all the minerals previously withdrawn are not present in balance, adequate re-mineralization (repair) does not take place, and the minerals are placed in secondary storage areas.
About every ten years we discover another mineral that bones must have in order to re-mineralize, that we previously did not know about. Manganese and Silicates are the last two minerals discovered that bones must have to rebuild. It seems as if there may always be a new mineral that we discover bones need. Obviously, this can make treatment difficult… unless you know the simple, natural, answer in this newsletter.
The Osteoarthritis and Arteriosclerosis Connection
Therefore, if the research is accurate, when bones de-mineralize, they tend to do that in balance as well. The unused minerals that contribute to bone structure are hoarded by a body that considers them precious. Unable to get back into bones, because of being out of balance, these unused minerals are stored in the body’s secondary storage sites, soft lining tissue. Lining tissue is a major secondary storage site for minerals, and is supposed to be used as a temporary storage area. When minerals are stored in lining tissue for a protracted period of time, the lining tissue becomes susceptible to hardening (sclerosis). Lining tissue makes up the linings of the arteries, joints, respiratory system, digestive system, urogenital system, and skin.
For example, there isn’t a mature woman alive that hasn’t noticed that her skin is less soft than it was when she was a girl. This is the result of the hardening phenomenon we are talking about, and it takes place in all of the body’s lining tissues as it is taking place in the skin.
This phenomenon of aging, tissue mineralization, has been recognized in the medical literature on stress for a long time. The scenario occurs like this: stressful situations create a need for specific minerals, minerals are liberated from bones (in balance), the needed ones are used, and the remainder are stored in lining tissue until the minerals that were utilized are again supplied in the diet, at which time minerals are withdrawn from lining tissue and replaced in the bones, always within a range of balance. That way, bones remain strong, and able to perform their other physiological duties.
Theoretically then, Osteoporosis (bone de-mineralization), Osteoarthritis (joint mineralization), and Arteriosclerosis (vascular mineralization), although different named diseases, are all part of a common physiological process. Therefore, it follows that if the underlying common physiological process is the focus of treatment, instead of the diseases, all three diseases should get better together. That, in fact, is what happens.
Implications on Aging
If we understand that all lining tissue is compromised when mineralization/demineralization occurs improperly due to a nutritional mineral deficiency, then we have a partial explanation of how other compromised lining tissue areas contribute to the aging process. For example, vital nutrients will pass less effectively through the lining of the gut, and oxygen exchange will occur less effectively through the lungs when these areas succumb to sub-clinical mineralization, both common occurrences in the elderly; therefore, adequate mineral supplementation is critical to retard the aging process. This becomes even more important given that United States Department of Agriculture studies show the mineral content of our foods has declined by twenty to fifty percent since World War I, and the advent of big Agribusiness and the demise of the small independent farmer.
Home Testing for Osteoporosis
In order to effectively treat something, it is most advantageous to have a tool to measure progress, or lack of it. Specialize X-rays called bone densitometry studies, or bone scans, are most commonly used, but of course they have the negative cumulative side effects that all x-rays have. The measuring tool I learned about that day in the library was the big toenails (great toe only). Apparently the only toenail to reflect bone imbalance is the big one, and when lining tissue is getting thicker and harder, so is this toenail. Elderly people with severe Osteoporosis have great toenails that are thick, hard and difficult to cut. Toenails can also become hard, thick and disfigured by fungal infection under the nail, which has become common in the last half century due to the overuse of antibiotics and other drugs, and it is important to differentiate between the two.
In order to confirm this information I purchased a micrometer, a tool used for measuring very small changes in thickness, and started measuring great toenail thickness on my patients. I found that the older you get, the more likely the chance of your great toenails getting thick and hard. It seems to be part of the natural aging process. With further research I learned that the thickness was due to more Calcium accumulation in the nail, and the hardness factor was due more to the build-up of Magnesium.
I also learned that under proper treatment, great toenails will most often revert back to the thickness and hardness that was characteristic of them in young adulthood. When this happens, people’s symptoms of cold hands and feet, caused by Arteriosclerosis, and joint pain, caused by Osteoarthritis, seem to miraculously improve. The best part of this measuring tool is that you don’t need a doctor to monitor your progress or subject yourself to regular bone scans (x-rays) and their accompanying cumulative side effects.
I attempted many things to help my patients with this physiological condition. I tried Calcium supplementation, then Calcium and Magnesium supplementation, and on and on with little or no results. This should come as no surprise, because to this day we still do not have an accepted medical treatment that is safe and effective for Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, or Arteriosclerosis.
The initial approach was to supplement with Calcium. Most women who participated in this form of therapy began to experience symptoms of Calcium/Magnesium imbalance within four to ten years. The first symptom was usually foot and leg cramps, followed in a year or two by rapid heartbeat, and eventually a myocardial infarction (heart attack). Magnesium was eventually added to the approach and the deadly side effects were almost completely eliminated. Calcium and Magnesium are usually found balanced in nature, and supplementing in this manner solved the side effect problem; however, decades of testing have shown that this approach has produced virtually no results in stopping or reversing Osteoporosis. That’s because bones aren’t made of Calcium and Magnesium. Although Calcium and Magnesium are important, all the minerals need to be present… and bones are made of many different minerals.
The pharmaceutical industry then discovered the Biphoshphonates. Fosamax was the first, followed by Actonel, Didronel, Boniva, and Reclast. As usual, these drugs were heralded as a great breakthrough in the battle against Osteoporosis. This is an area of serious concern for any woman needing to make a decision about future drug therapy, and as a result I have written a separate newsletter article — Are Biphosphonate Medications (Fosamax, Actonel, Didronel, Bonive, and Reclast) Really Helping Or Hurting Our Elderly?. The side effects from these drugs are frightening, and downplayed by the medical/pharmaceutical industrial complex that promotes them. It is in your best interest to know this information before using these medications.
In my search for an effective treatment, mineral balance was the key. I found that the perfect product existed that contained all the minerals bones need, and in perfect balance. This product even contains the minerals that science has yet to discover are necessary for proper bone re-mineralization. This incredible product is Glandular bone. This bone supplement comes from the bones of New Zealand open range, pasture fed calves raised in pesticide-free environments, and specifically raised for the harvest of their tissues for the production of Glandular supplements. The tissue is then processed at body temperature (low heat) to keep it functionally intact. Recently, this form of Glandular bone has become popular as Microcrystaline Hydroxyapatite, and it is the primary ingredient in NuMedica’s OsteoMedica that makes it onto my favorites list. It usually takes between a year and a year and a half for a noticeable difference to be seen in the great toenails because they grow so slowly. Standard Bone Scan examinations correlate well with the changes in great toenail thickness.
How to SupplementIf you have been diagnosed with any of the above diseases, double the recommended amount of OsteoMedica Plus. If that dosage is not sufficient to produce the desired results, call the Health Help Hotline for individual help. I answer this line, 800-888-4866, on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. mornings between 10 and 12, Central time. It’s a free call. OsteoMedica can be found under Supplements on the website, and by clicking on the NuMedica button.
A New Product for Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are infections of the kidneys and urinary bladder. These infections are so common that there are TV commercials informing viewers of medications that they can ask their doctors and pharmacists about for relief. Usually antibiotics are involved to some degree, and in the vast majority of instances the culprit is a bacterium that is normally present in the large intestine, which is where it belongs. That bacterium is E. coli, but this is not the mutant E. coli that is associated with unsanitary food processing, but a normal inhabitant of our intestinal tract. Unfortunately, when it manages to get into our urinary tract it can cause lots of problems.
Lately, I have had an unusual number of patients with UTIs in my practice. It is unusual because most people think of an infection as a strictly medical problem requiring antibiotics, and therefore would not consult with a natural practitioner like myself. I guess word of mouth must be creating these referrals, because our results are usually excellent, and most of my patients have tried the medical approach, some for years and a few for decades. All my patients come with a medical diagnosis, but many women suffer with the urinary symptoms of itching, burning, feeling of fullness, need to urinate frequently and/or immediately and never seek medical help.
The problem is mostly found in women because of the nature of the anatomy, although occasionally it is found in men. If a husband or wife has E.coli they tend to pass it back and forth, so it's best to treat both. I have seen women who experience a UTI after every menstrual cycle and who have been on antibiotics constantly or episodically for years; I have seen women who have been repeatedly hospitalized with UTIs; I have seen women who have UTIs after sex; and I have seen women who struggle at the job because of frequent urination, immediacy of urination, and the discomfort of sitting for protracted periods of time.
Imbalance is the problem. When the balance between the many competing microbial members of the intestinal tract is disturbed, bad things happen. Among the list of bad things we will find is Leaky Gut Syndrome (which most readers of this newsletter are familiar with because of experience with NAET) and UTIs. Most of these UTIs occur when E.coli migrate across the small space between anal opening and the urethra.
Unfortunately, antibiotic treatment not only eliminates the E.coli that's causing the UTI, but also contributes to the imbalance in the gut microbial flora that started the problem in the first place contributing to even more UTIs in the future. That is why so many UTIs sufferers using antibiotics get better then worse, over and over again. The alternative to antibiotics for most common UTIs is a substance called D-Mannose. D-Mannose is an invert sugar. Our body isn't designed to use it efficiently so when it is ingested it is rapidly excreted… and that is why it works as well as it does.
E.coli have finger like projections that actually stick to the wall of the bladder or kidney, so they are not easily washed away by urination. These projections on the E.coli have an affinity for D-Mannose, and when it is present in sufficient quantity it carries the E.coli out in the process of urination. D-Mannose, unlike antibiotics, doesn't kill E.coli, it simply washes it away. Additionally, D-Mannose does not produce the side effect of antibiotics, in fact it doesn't produce any at all. Because it is not readily metabolized by the body, D-Mannose is safe for diabetics, pregnant women, and even very small children.
The recommended dosage is on every bottle. In our office, I will muscle test for an exact doseage, and occasionally, it will be considerably higher than that recommended on the bottle, but if one takes the recommended doseage on the bottle, in time the E.coli infection will be gone. If taking D-Mannose does not eliminate the UTI, the chances that the UTI is caused by some other agent is good, and a different course of action should be pursued. About ten percent of UTIs are caused by something other than E.coli.
Preventics now carries D-Mannose. A bottle of 100, 300mg capsules sells for $35.00.
FDA Examines Food Dyes & Hyperactivity
Medicine continued to pursue the One Cause/One Cure approach, and because the Feingold Diet didn't fix everyone it was paid scant attention by the authorities.
My 'hyperactive' patients received decent results when applying the diet and we still check for these sensitivities with the NAET protocol and find they are often a culprit. Ben Feingold can be googled successfully for more information. I wonder if the FDA has figured out how to google?
Bone 350 Plus
We are temporarily out of the Bone 350 Plus supplement, and the factory tells us it won't have any in for at least three weeks. We apologize for this inconvenience.
We have left Bone 350 on our order form. Our order desk is maintaining a list of those who order and we will contact you as soon as it becomes available.
Fortunately, Minerals are important enough to be stored by the body, and we should all be able to get through this inconvenience without compromise to our health.
Supplements Reduce The Risk Of Autism
Scientists at the University of California, Davis MIND Institute have determined that mothers that did not take prenatal vitamins were twice as likely to have an autistic child. Of course they are asking for further studies. If they had found a drug that would reduce the risk by half, every mother-to-be would be on that drug – ASAP.
We know that genetics plays a big role in autistic spectrum disorders, but our environment dictates which genes turn on and off so this research is no surprise to those of us who understand the genetics. The environment that we are referring too here is food, or more specifically, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals.
It has been my opinion, and the opinion of the scientific authorities that I listen too, that not only is the average American diet a disease producing disaster, but prescribed pre-natal vitamins are woefully inadequate.
I have had expectant moms under my care who all take additional supplementation in addition to their pre-natal vitamins, and I have never had one of my moms have a child with an autistic spectrum disorder. The research that supports these ideas has been around for over fifty years, and is readily available to anyone who is interested enough to review the literature.
If you talk to families who have an autistic child, it is not unusual for them to tell you that the autistic behavior didn't start until shortly after a vaccination. Adequate nutrition through supplementation, especially during breast feeding, will also reduce risk. Optimum vitamin and mineral levels have been know for decades to help detoxify toxins and heavy metals, even the mercury associated with vaccines.
The most important of these supplements in my opinion is Vitamin C, and that is a story all by itself. I have written newsletters on Vitamin C that you can access, if you are so inclined.
Monsanto Hopes To Satisfy Americans' Hunger For Superstar Foods
St. Louis based Monsanto hopes to satisfy Americans' hunger for superstar foods.
Business Section, K.C. Star, Tuesday, May 17
This is insanity, and our FDA is allowing it. Most of the foods we eat now are either hybrids or genetically engineered. Even the produce sections of the supermarket are unsafe, and the more we eat these "super foods" the sicker we are getting and the more drugs we need to take.
If you are not buying at local farmers' markets you are making a mistake. At these markets you can get to know the farmers, what they are selling, and what their philosophies are regarding healthy crops.
It has now been well established that the human body does not readily identify genetically modified foods as actual food, and there is a battle brewing between responsible scientists and physicians against the big businesses that are poisoning the population for profit.
I've been writing about this for over a decade, so it's time to pay attention. You can find information about local farmers' markets from the Kansas City Food Circle, while at www.askdoctordavid.com, go to the Referral Network and click on K.C. Food Circle. Dangers Of BBQ, What's The Truth?
Lately, I've seen several articles about the dangers of BBQ. What's the truth?
There is no question that cooking animal flesh over an open flame yields a meal loaded with carcinogens. Heterocyclic amines (HCA's), caused by cooking meat over high heat, have been known to be a potential problem for as long as I have been in practice (a very long time).
I'm always fascinated by the majority of these articles because they don't tell the whole truth. They just focus on making BBQ a bad guy.
In truth, most of us eat veggies and fruit along with our summer BBQ, and those foods are full of the antioxidant vitamins that protect us against HCA's. Additionally, if you are receiving this newsletter you are undoubtedly smart enough to supplement your diet with additional vitamins and minerals, and these are the chemicals that protect us against these harmful HCA's.
Undoubtedly, the most important protective antioxidant is Vitamin C, so don't stop taking your Vitamin C during the warm BBQ season, it's good for a lot more than thwarting the common cold.
Safe Until Proven Faulty is killing us, isn't it time for Unacceptable Until Proven Safe?
The European model of "unacceptable until proven safe" has protected citizens from big business shenanigans, enhancing overall health and well being across the continent. The American model of "safe until proven faulty" is killing us.
I received an email video over the weekend from a friend in California. The topic was "why does the USA have the highest rate of cancer in the world?" The ideas on the video could be found in my newsletters that go back over ten or fifteen years, but I have never made my points so elegantly or persuasively. I highly recommend viewing this video, a TEDxTalks presentation by Robyn O'Brien.
Yes, eating genetically engineered veggies and the consumption of manufactured foods is behind the recent epidemic of allergies and asthma. It is also a major player in the USA having the highest cancer rate in the world, but is that the real problem? I think the real problem is regulation and the video makes a poignant argument for that fact. It doesn't specifically mention companies like Dow and Monsanto, but it's not too hard to figure out who the bad guys are.
In the Kansas City Star (Tuesday, June 21, 2011), a front page article gave one more example of that, and how dangerous our "safe until proven faulty" approach may become in the near future. The title of the article was "nuclear industry, regulators maintain cozy relationship." The article gave clear examples of how the regulatory agencies that are in place to protect us are actually in bed with the very companies they are supposed to be protecting us from. Frankly, the article scared the hell out of me. I knew that there was danger from these nuclear plants, but I didn't realize the degree.
Then on page A10, an editorial titles "Kansas failed citizens on Sunflower plant" told the same old story. So it doesn't matter if the agency is federal, such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or the Food and Drug Agency, or the local Kansas Department of Health and Environment, we need to regulate the regulators. This should become a major election issue, and that can happen if we all communicate our concern to our legislatures.
Every day I go into the office and work with children and grandchildren who are so much sicker than kids were when I was in school. It's heart wrenching, and it needs to stop. It can be stopped, one person at a time. Let's do this. Please!
Autism Study Downplays Genetic Role
A new study of twins suggests that the environment, including conditions in the womb, may be at least as important as genes in causing autism.
This just proves that if you give science long enough it will sift through the politics of an issue and eventually reach an intelligent conclusion… and this is just the beginning. Joachim Hallmayer, an associate professor of psychiatry at Stanford University found an elevated risk of autism in children whose mothers took a popular type of antidepressant, so called SSRI's like Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, and Lexapro, during the year before delivery.
It won't be long before someone publishes a landmark study in a major peer reviewed journal finding a strong link between the aluminum/mercury dose in vaccines and autism. You can only hide a wolf in lamb's clothing for so long.
Low Carbohydrate, High Protein Diets May Reduce Both Tumor Growth Rates and Cancer Risk
Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research recently published the above titled study. The study was conducted on mice, but the scientists involved agree that the strong biological findings are definitive enough that an effect in humans can be considered.
On reviewing the research, I would have to say that the results went beyond statistically significant, all the way to amazing. When asked to speculate on the results, the researchers stated that unlike normal cells, cancer cells need significantly more glucose to grow and thrive. Restricting carbohydrate intake can significantly limit blood glucose and insulin, a hormone that has been shown in many independent studies to promote tumor growth in both humans and mice.
Furthermore, they stated, that a low carbohydrate, high protein diet has the potential to boost both the ability of the immune system to kill cancer cells and prevent obesity, which is a risk factor for cancer.
This information about sugar and cancer can be traced back to the late 1930's and early 1940's work of Otto Warburg, M.D., Ph.D. I've been telling you that for almost forty years. Our government's marriage to the low fat, high carbohydrate diet has been killing us for decades.
If you are considering a high protein diet for your family, it is important to realize that you can not attain health eating unhealthy food. Meat, chicken and fish that is tainted with anabolic hormones and antibiotics will harm you more than it will help you. You need to be eating healthy food. That translates to grass fed and grass finished beef; free range chicken; and fresh caught (not farmed) fish. Fish is a particular problem because of the antibiotics used to preserve the fish for days and sometimes weeks after they have been caught and held in the hold of the fishing vessels.
If you get to know local farmers, they are your families best bet for healthy protein sources. There is information regarding healthy sources for food at askdoctordavid.com, in the referral network section.
Alcohol Is A Cancer Risk, And There Is No Safe Amount
A recent Canadian study is strong enough that the Canadian government may soon change its recommendations regarding intake and risk.
Alcohol causes the body to use vital micronutrients needed for normal healthy physiology for alcohol detoxification, even if you only have one glass of wine a day. The critical micronutrients are vitamins and minerals, in particular, members of the B-complex family.
Better safe than sorry.

For years, while using the Atrium line of vitamins, I recommended a product that I formulated back in the 1970s. It was standard and customary for a family with a member under my care, and on a specific vitamin supplement program, to also be interested in a high quality multi-vitamin for the remainder of the family, as an absolute minimum. People who don't take a minimum of a daily multi-vitamin are foolish, given the nature of the food quality available in the USA compared to what was available 50 years ago. It was just a smart thing to do, and it still is.
Since the demise of Atrium, I have searched a number of nutritional pharmaceutical companies for a superior, professional quality multi for adults, and I ended up choosing the multi vitamins from NuMedica. For children, ages four to ten, I recommend a Douglas chewable multi, and for infants and youngsters I recommend the Awaken Nutrition product, Agape.
The NuMedica multi for men is called MultiMedica for Men and contains no Iron or Copper and is free of wheat, yeast, dairy products, artificial colors, sweeteners or preservatives. It is designed to provide support for the ordinary diet, antioxidant support, support for prostate health, detoxification protection, and support for a stressful lifestyle. Now who doesn't need that? The suggested dosage is four capsules a day, but when we muscle test for optimum dose on a per patient basis we often find that two or three capsules is sufficient.
The NuMedica multi for pre-menopausal women is called MultiMedica for Women and contains no Copper and is free of wheat, gluten, yeast, dairy products, artificial colors, sweeteners or preservatives. It is designed to provide additional bone support, balanced hormones, support for hair and nails, support for a stressful lifestyle, antioxidant protection, and support for a healthy thyroid. The suggested dosage is four capsules a day, but when we muscle test for optimum dose on a per patient basis we often find that two or three capsules is sufficient.
The NuMedica multi for post-menopausal women is called MultiMedica without Iron and contains no wheat, yeast, dairy, artificial colors, sweeteners or preservatives. It is designed to provide comprehensive support for the challenges that accompany menopause and beyond. The suggested dosage is four capsules a day, but when we muscle test for optimum dose on a per patient basis we often find that two or three capsules is sufficient.
The Douglas Laboratories multi for children between the ages of four and ten, Ultra Preventive Kids (grape flavor) and Ultra Preventive Kids (orange flavor) are chewables, and the recommended dose is two a day. These are professional quality supplements specifically designed to meet the needs of a growing child.
The Awaken Nutrition liquid multi for infants to age four, Agape, is a special product that contains the methylated forms of Folic Acid and Vitamin B-12. It is preferred for all children who have behavioral/academic challenges. Because dosage varies so much from child to child, I strongly suggest that we muscle test each case for exact dosage.
NuMedica and Douglas products can be found by clicking on the respective badges/buttons under ordering on the website. Agape is available through my dispensary, Preventics
Fountain of youth????
Did the Australian Olympians for the 2000 and 2004 games discover the proverbial "fountain of youth?" The International Olympic Committee launched an inquiry following Australia's much higher than anticipated number of medals and found no illegal substance abuse (doping). What they found was the use of Bovine colostrum, not a banned substance, creating the winning edge for the Aussies. Bovine colostrum enhanced endurance and strength and reduced recovery time, and when you look closely at this unplanned, but remarkably important, trial of colostrum, it is impossible to avoid the implications for aging. Bovine colostrum may, in fact, be as close as we have come to a "fountain of youth."
Point #1 – Aging progresses as the amount of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) declines, and after age 20 it declines about 15% each decade. HGH injections are prohibitively expensive and fraught with risk, one of which is an increased risk of cancer. Many experts believe the risks outweigh the benefits. However, colostrum is the only food source of all the growth hormones required by the human body and it's safe. Again, it's safe.
Additionally, death of the cell occurs when they stop replicating. Telomeres, which occur on the end of the chromosomes, become shorter with age, and people with short telomeres don't live as long as those with long telomeres. Colostrum preserves telomeres, allowing cells to replicate over and over, thereby slowing cell death... and when most our cells die we're going with 'em.
Point #2 – Increasing lean body mass and reducing adipose tissue is critical for both the athlete and the individual that wants to remain fir, and slow the aging process as much as possible within reasonable limits. This can be attained by the non-athlete by increasing insulin like growth factor 1(IGF-1), and this can be accomplished by two or three days a week of reasonable exercise combined with colostrum supplementation. I do slow motion exercise at least twice a week as described in The Slow Burn Fitness Revolution by Hahn, Eades, MD, and Eades, MD. On the alternative days, I ride my exercise bike for at least 30 minutes, always followed by colostrum. This keeps the muscle wasting of aging to a minimum and strengthens bone too.
Additionally, colostrum contains leptin, and elevated leptin levels increase satiety, reducing caloric intake, and aiding weight loss.
Point #3 – Colostrum also aids in the stabilization of blood sugar. Although this may be more recognizable by athletes, it has a significant impact on aging by reducing the risk of type II diabetes. Research shows that bovine colostrum not only helps reduce blood glucose but cholesterol and triglycerides as well. Healthy physical activity is essential for optimum results, but supplementing with colostrum is a win-win for those of us wanting to maintain a more youthful appearance.
Point #4 – The Aussies found that after four weeks of supplementation they had up to 20% increase in strength, stamina, and endurance, and recovery time after intense exercise was reduced by nearly half. Now, the dosage of colostrum was high, but is anyone really not interested in those benefits? I will never be an athlete again, but I sure want those benefits, and I can achieve them with significantly reduced supplementation.
Have you heard about glutathione? It's the most powerful anti-oxidant made by your body, and all of the necessary building blocks for glutathione can be found in colostrum. Now that's a big added benefit.
Point #5 – The growth hormones in colostrum help to accelerate tissue healing and bone regeneration, and although accelerated healing is a super benefit to the athlete, it's a good thing to have going for you no matter how old you are.
Point #6 – Improved immune system function is also a benefit, especially helpful reducing respiratory infections. It is especially beneficial to those with a compromised immune system. The proline-rich polypeptides in colostrum are powerful immune modulators that act by stimulating the sluggish immune system and suppressing the over-active immune system, bringing the immune system back into balance.
Point #7 – You know I had to get around to this last point. Colostrum helps heal the Gut as in Leaky Gut Syndrome. As you know, with my co-specialty being Allergy Elimination, and Leaky Gut Syndrome being the primary cause of allergies, this is an important part of the healing phase in my Leaky Gut Treatment Protocol.
Colostrum should be taken on an empty stomach, especially effective immediately after exercise and with one dose taken before bed. There are no know contra-indications. Dosing is best determined by Neuro-muscular reflex testing (muscle testing), and varies greatly depending on the goals of the individual being tested. Athletes at the professional level often need 10 to 20 grams twice a day for maximum results, but many middle-agers and oldsters who simply want to hold off the "Reaper" as long as possible while still feeling functional (living a reasonable lifestyle) require much less. That's where the muscle testing is so helpful determining individual dosage.
I use NuMedica's ImmunoG PRP (colostrum) in capsule form, but powder is also available.
