Lately, I have had an unusual number of patients with UTIs in my practice. It is unusual because most people think of an infection as a strictly medical problem requiring antibiotics, and therefore would not consult with a natural practitioner like myself. I guess word of mouth must be creating these referrals, because our results are usually excellent, and most of my patients have tried the medical approach, some for years and a few for decades. All my patients come with a medical diagnosis, but many women suffer with the urinary symptoms of itching, burning, feeling of fullness, need to urinate frequently and/or immediately and never seek medical help.

The problem is mostly found in women because of the nature of the anatomy, although occasionally it is found in men. If a husband or wife has E.coli they tend to pass it back and forth, so it’s best to treat both. I have seen women who experience a UTI after every menstrual cycle and who have been on antibiotics constantly or episodically for years; I have seen women who have been repeatedly hospitalized with UTIs; I have seen women who have UTIs after sex; and I have seen women who struggle at the job because of frequent urination, immediacy of urination, and the discomfort of sitting for protracted periods of time.

Imbalance is the problem. When the balance between the many competing microbial members of the intestinal tract is disturbed, bad things happen. Among the list of bad things we will find is Leaky Gut Syndrome (which most readers of this newsletter are familiar with because of experience with NAET) and UTIs. Most of these UTIs occur when E.coli migrate across the small space between anal opening and the urethra.

Unfortunately, antibiotic treatment not only eliminates the E.coli that’s causing the UTI, but also contributes to the imbalance in the gut microbial flora that started the problem in the first place contributing to even more UTIs in the future. That is why so many UTIs sufferers using antibiotics get better then worse, over and over again. The alternative to antibiotics for most common UTIs is a substance called D-Mannose. D-Mannose is an invert sugar. Our body isn’t designed to use it efficiently so when it is ingested it is rapidly excreted… and that is why it works as well as it does.

E.coli have finger like projections that actually stick to the wall of the bladder or kidney, so they are not easily washed away by urination. These projections on the E.coli have an affinity for D-Mannose, and when it is present in sufficient quantity it carries the E.coli out in the process of urination. D-Mannose, unlike antibiotics, doesn’t kill E.coli, it simply washes it away. Additionally, D-Mannose does not produce the side effect of antibiotics, in fact it doesn’t produce any at all. Because it is not readily metabolized by the body, D-Mannose is safe for diabetics, pregnant women, and even very small children.

The recommended dosage is on every bottle. In our office, I will muscle test for an exact doseage, and occasionally, it will be considerably higher than that recommended on the bottle, but if one takes the recommended doseage on the bottle, in time the E.coli infection will be gone. If taking D-Mannose does not eliminate the UTI, the chances that the UTI is caused by some other agent is good, and a different course of action should be pursued. About ten percent of UTIs are caused by something other than E.coli.

In a position sharply at odds with operators of Confined Animal Feeding Operations (factory farms), the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates antibiotics in animals and humans, has recently proposed to end the use of many drugs such as routine antibiotics and growth promoters in hogs and other livestock. Only antibiotics such as ionophores that have no human use would be permitted to speed animals’ growth. The FDA has set a schedule for phasing out the drugs’ use.

Factory farm operators elect to use antibiotics on all animals, regardless of their level of health. Because of this, the animals excrete excess antibiotics and this waste enters the environment, creating large amounts of antibiotic runoff. This runoff kills naturally occurring bacteria, upsetting the ecological balance. It also causes increased human exposure to antibiotics by entering the water supply and residues in meats. Because of this overexposure, human, plant and animal pathogens are becoming increasingly resistant to specific antibiotics – a severe threat to the global population.

This was recently discussed in a previous newsletter regarding its relationship to the increase in the deadly MRSA infections occurring around the industrialized world.

On Feb. 9 of this year, Katie Couric of CBS investigated the overuse of antibiotics in livestock and some of the ramifications. In the investigation, a University of Iowa study was featured that found a brand new strain of MRSA (Methacillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). The hog study found MRSA in 70% of the animals and 64% of the workers. Several farms in Iowa and Western Illinois were studied. All of the farms with MRSA were factory farms and all used antibiotics routinely. On antibiotic free farms that were not factory farms, no MRSA was found.

Most of us don’t think much about MRSA, and when we do we think of hospital related infections and perhaps the occasional case of an athletic locker room case of transmission, but beware. Our government is once again involved in covering up the enormity of a problem it should have controlled with more careful inspections decades ago. Drug resistant infections killed over 70,000 Americans last year. That’s more deaths than from AIDS, and we can characterize this as an “emerging health crisis” like CBS did or call it what it is, which is an epidemic.

I have advised buying meat and poultry from smaller organically oriented farms for decades for these very reasons. Unfortunately, antibiotic resistant strains like MRSA can spread in many ways. It’s a matter of time before it’s in the food chain (if it isn’t already), and it can even be in the water runoff from a farm, and/or in the air. Things can happen very quickly with these deadly antibiotic resistant bacterial strains, which is why this factory farming practice and flagrant use of antibiotics has to be stopped.

Unfortunately, as long as the Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex is making a fortune providing these antibiotics, the government agencies that they tend to control will not be responsive to the public’s needs. It is unfortunate that the government agencies that were put in place to protect us have been manipulated by the very businesses that they were to supposed to protect us against, but that’s politics for you. You can begin to change this with your vote and your pocket book at the super market.

We can’t have it both ways… safe food and cheap food. I’ll vote for safe, and I hope you resolve to do the same for the sake of our children and grandchildren.
