In the last few years, some very important research has revealed a major underlying cause of cancer and how to prevent it. This new information also provides new answers to our present epidemic of heart disease. To begin this discussion, first a brief review of the essential fatty acids. They’re called essential because, if we don’t get them in our diet, we will eventually get sick and die.

There are two essential fatty acids, Linoleic acid and Alpha Linolenic Acid. Linoleic Acid and its derivatives make up the essential fatty acids referred to as the Omega 6 family, and Alpha Linolenic Acid and its derivatives make up the Omega 3 family. The media is full of information about the Omega 3 derivatives (Eicosapentanoic acid and Docosahexanoic acid), but they don’t tell you that, if you get adequate amounts of the parent oil, your body will make all the derivatives it needs exactly when and where it needs them. The only exception to this is when there is a rare enzyme deficiency that hampers the conversion process, and that can usually be managed by increasing the intake of that parent essential oil.

The Omega 3s

These products are the stars of the media circus around the essential fatty acids (EFAs). It seems like everyone is selling a superior fish oil these days. Although these EFAs are especially important in growing children for healthy brain development through the formative years, they are much less important in the adult. If we keep in mind that the brain is 60% fat by weight, having adequate EFAs for brain development is obvious. In infants and children, the brain is in a state of rapid growth and development, whereas in adults, the need for these Omega 3 EFAs decreases enormously. Although all our organs and tissues need the Omega 3 EFAs, compared to the requirements for brain healing and development, the need is small.

The Omega 6s

These EFAs are the real unheralded heros, but they are in such abundance in the diet that they get short shrift in the literature. Unfortunately for us, our FDA has allowed food manufacturers to process these Omega 6 EFAs to eliminate spoilage and increase shelf life. Many manufactured foods that contain processed EFAs can sit on a shelf for years without spoiling: the Twinky is a good example. The Omega 6 family of EFAs are the most abundant in our diet, and now we know that they are also the most important. It’s the adulteration/processing of these Omega 6 EFAs that plays such a huge role in cancer.

The Ratios Tell The Story

What really matters is the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3, not only in the brain and nervous system, but in all of the body organs and tissues. In the brain and nervous system, the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 EFAs is one to one. In every other organ and tissue, the Omega 6′s are much more important. In muscle, which makes up about half of our adult solid weight, the necessary healthy ratio is between seven and eight to one, Omega 6 to Omega 3. In lining tissue, that would be skin, sinuses, lungs, stomach, small & large intestines, urogenital system, joints and the lining of the blood vessels, etc., the ratio is one thousand to one, Omega 6 to Omega 3. That’s correct, one thousand to one, Omega 6 to Omega 3.

Where’s The Fat?

Of course we know that fat can be found in adipose tissue, but that’s storage fat, and when was the last time you heard of a cancer in adipose tissue? Exactly! So where are the rest of these EFAs found, and what’s their job?

The cell membrane surrounds the cell and then convolutes about throughout the cell contributing to its shape and size. This cell membrane structure is made up of an outer coating of protein, a middle layer of EFAs, and an inner layer of protein. That’s kind of like a sandwich with fat in the middle and protein on the outside. Fat also plays many other important roles, but for this discussion, the EFAs that make up the middle layer of the cell wall structure are the ones of interest.

These middle layer EFAs are the cells oxygen magnets. Otto Warburg, M.D., Ph.D., researched, discovered and published his findings regarding a major underlying cause of cancer as far back as the 1950s. This work is popular in Germany where he practiced and did his research, but is just coming to the attention of the establishment in this country. Warburg demonstrated unequivocally that lining tissue cells deprived of oxygen eventually begin to create their energy by combusting more sugar than oxygen, by the process of glycolysis. In time, this leads to a cancer cell. Although this sugar-cancer connection was established over half a century ago, most oncologists are still unaware of this research. Simply put, cancer lives on sugar.

Oxygen in the lungs is drawn through the lining of the lungs, the lining of the tiny capillaries in the lungs, and into the hemoglobin molecule within the red blood cell (RBC). It’s safe to say that this hemoglobin molecule has a very powerful attraction for oxygen. When that RBC reaches the lining tissue and again is squeezing through a narrow capillary, something must have a greater attraction for that oxygen molecule than hemoglobin to pull the oxygen from the RBC and into the lining tissue cell. The something that has this tremendous attraction for oxygen is fat. The EFAs that make up the middle layer of the cell wall structure are what pull the oxygen from the RBC, and in this case we’re talking about the Omega 6 EFAs, mostly the parent oil, Linoleic Acid.

The Crux Of The Problem

Once food is processed to keep its shelf life, the fat has been changed into a different form that no longer has an attraction for oxygen. One of the processes, and the most utilized until recently, was the hydrogenation of fat, converting healthy fat into trans fatty acids that have no oxygen attracting ability. Now that the consumer is becoming aware of the damage done by trans fatty acids causing cancer and heart disease, the big food processors have devised other means to preserve shelf life. Unfortunately, anything that interferes with the oxygen attracting ability of fat will be just as dangerous as trans fatty acids/hydrogenated fats.

How Big Is The Problem?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), eighty-five percent (85%) of the cancer found in the industrialized world is lining tissue cancer, or Adenocarcinoma. They make up the bulk of the breast, prostate, lung, sinus, mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon cancers, as well as most cancers of the urogenital system. Before World War II, when consumers ate mostly fresh foods and few processed foods, cancer was a much smaller problem. In fact, before the Second World War, relatively few people died of cancer. By 1971, the government declared a war on cancer, and now cancer has surpassed heart disease as the number one killer in the USA. Obviously, medical science isn’t winning this war, so if we want to protect our families, we will have to take action for ourselves.

What’s The Solution?

Well, there isn’t just one solution to reducing cancer risk, but a big contributor is reducing the processed fat we get in our diets. Given time and a good supplemental dosage of the parent essential oils the body will replace the damaged fat that has been incorporated into our lining tissue cell walls with healthy Omega 6 EFAs that have oxygen attracting capacity. This can take many months but is worth the effort. This is, very possibly, the biggest nutritional breakthrough since I started studying and practicing nutrition over forty years ago.

What’s The Test?

Obviously, we need a test to let us know we have accomplished our goal. Most medical tests are expensive, this one isn’t. Just pay attention to your poop. That’s right, if your stools float, it means a little bit of fat is getting through your gut and therefore not being absorbed. I usually suggest starting at four YES parent essential oil capsules a day for three months. If your stools haven’t begun to float, you increase the dosage to five capsules per day for another month. If they still don’t float you increase the dosage to six capsules per day for another month, etc. Once you get floating stools, you stay at that dosage for a month before cutting the dosage back by one capsule per day for a month. If after a month, your stools are still floating you cut back another capsule per day for another month. If your stools start sinking again, you simply add back one YES parent essential oil capsule until you once again have floaters. This way each person is adjusting his/her dosage to individual need.

Who’s Responsible?

Most of this work is the result of impeccable research by Professor Brian Peskin. Brian Peskin can be Googled. His books are the talk of the alternative/complimentary medical community and can be comprehended by most people with a solid high school education.

Availability

YES parent essential oils are available through Preventics and can be found on our price list, the order order blank and on the online order form – listed as Parent Essential Fatty Acids under Essential Oils & Fatty Acids. This product is still patent protected, so unfortunately Preventics is unable to have it made at a considerable discount. The YES parent essential oil supplement supplies 120 capsules (725 mg each), for $49.95. Hopefully, in time, our purchases will become large enough to get a significant discount from the manufacturer, which we will then be able to pass on to you.

Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) affects 75% of men over the age of 45. Of course, medicine is primarily into treatment of the symptom and ignores the more obvious underlying causes. I’d like to share with you what I feel is the best overall treatment of this condition, and then what I do at the office to eliminate the problem in most of my male patients complaining of BPH.

What Is BPH?

The prostate starts off in the embryo as the vestigial uterus. In males it drops into position around the base of the urethra. The urethra carries urine from the urinary bladder through the penis to the outside. When the prostate becomes swollen it reduces the force of the flow of urination; can makes starting and stopping of the stream more difficult; often affects sexual performance negatively; sometimes creates an inability to delay urination; and most often produces an increase in nocturnal urination. Getting up more than once a night to urinate is an important early warning sign of BPH. If you are experiencing these symptoms, a prostate exam and laboratory testing such as a prostate specific antigen test (PSA) is the medically recommended procedure. If the BPH diagnosis is made, drugs are usually the first approach. If the PSA is high, a biopsy is usually suggested, as BPH is a precursor of prostate cancer. All drugs have side effects, including those to manage the initial stages of BPH, and when taken long term pose an ever increasing risk. Natural products provide a safer and less expensive approach.

How To Reduce BPH With Supplements

In many European countries, Saw Palmetto is a treatment of choice by the medical community. Saw Palmetto is a saw grass derivative that reduces the inflammation and swelling of the prostate allowing more normal function. Treatment with Saw Palmetto should start with a push dose, or high initial dose. I usually suggest four of the 500mg capsules a day if nightly urination amounts to three or less trips. I usually suggest eight of the 500mg caps a day if nightly urination amounts to 4 or more trips. Symptoms will usually lessen quickly, and when only one trip a night becomes the norm, it’s time to start cutting back on the dosage a little at a time. When the symptoms start to re-occur it means you have cut the dosage back too far, and you increase it a little at a time until you are only up to urinate once a night.

Restful sleep is critical to good health, and sleep interrupted by multiple nightly excursions to the toilet has a significant negative impact on ones total health. BPH therefore contributes to a growing number of health problems attributed to aging as a result of insufficient rest.

Other helpful products for the prostate are Iodine/Iodide supplements. Many men with BPH also have a clinical or sub-clinical under active thyroid problem (hypo-thyroidism). The thyroid and the prostate are the two thirstiest organs for iodine, and any shortage of that mineral will cause problems. In my previous newsletter article, you will find a test for Iodine sufficiency that is cheap and can be easily done at home.

Zinc is also an important mineral for optimum prostate function. If you have white spots on your fingernails it suggests that a zinc deficiency is present. Usually 30mg of supplemental zinc a day for a month or two will correct this imbalance. Prostate glandular is another supplement that is specific for BPH. Three to six tablets a day has proven helpful in restoring normalcy to the prostate.

To reduce the inflammation of BPH, unsaturated fatty acids in the form of Borage Oil, Flax Seed Oil, or fish oil as Omega 3-EPA is helpful. A good indicator of oil soluble nutrient deficiency is dryness of the skin, especially between the ankles and the knees. I usually suggest that patients start taking one supplement a day for two weeks, and if the skin is still dry to increase it. Then every two weeks increase the dosage until the skin is no longer flaky, and that will be your maintenance dose.

These are the things that can control BPH successfully, for most people without medication. However, even more important is eliminating some of the causative factors behind this epidemic problem.

Getting At Some Of The Cause

Obviously, BPH has a multitude of contributing causes. Some are easily manageable and some are not, so let’s discuss the most important ones of the more easily manageable underlying causes. As you all know, I’m an old man, and had BPH symptoms myself many, many years ago. I controlled the problem with the supplements suggested above until I learned what I’m about to share with you next. It took me a few years of eating correctly before I could wean myself off the supplements, but now I seldom get up to urinate at night and I no longer take any supplemental help for the problem.

The main source of BPH, and subsequently the cancer that follows, in my opinion, gathered from a fairly thorough perusal of the research some two decades ago when I was in the midst of symptoms, is sex hormones. In particular, female steroid sex hormones. It has been the policy of the huge agribusiness farms to put female steroid sex hormones (estrogens) into the feed for steers, chickens, and swine so they will continue to eat heartily and put on weight even under the most inhumane conditions… and it works. Unfortunately, the astonishing rise in breast, uterine, ovarian, and prostate cancer coincides with this agribusiness policy. All of these aforementioned organs have an abundance of receptor sites for these hormones and are therefore extremely susceptible to any increases in estrogen, phytoestrogen, or pseudo-estrogen load. Add to this the increased use of soy products, which are loaded with phytoestrogens, and plastics which ablate pseudo-estrogens, and we have a considerable increase in steroid hormone body burden.

My Advice To You And Your Family…

Discontinue all soy products (I have written newsletters on this topic), and stop eating food prepared, stored, or packaged in plastic. Start using glass bottles for your water and especially baby water and formula. Probably most importantly, start buying grass fed and grass finished beef, and natural free range chicken. I haven’t researched an avenue for clean pork as it is something I gave up years ago. Nevertheless, if you’re a pork fan, find a farmer that raises a small herd and buy direct. I purchase my meat, and I eat a lot of it, from Skyview Farm.

How Big Is The Problem?

The last statistics that I read stated that 75% of men over the age of 45 experienced symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). I’d certainly call those epidemic proportions. However, as mainline medicine has little in its medicinal armamentarium to relieve this disorder without incurring serious long-term side effects, I felt it an appropriate subject for the newsletter. Of course, once you start taking the medicine for BPH, it’s a “for the rest of your life” commitment, as the condition is considered one of ageing. Keeping BPH under control is a laudable goal, as eventually, the possibilities for the occurrence of prostate cancer loom large.

What Are The Symptoms Of BPH?

The most common symptom of BPH is gradual loss of force behind the urinary stream. This often results in dripping and staining of the underwear. BPH also often results in an inability to delay urination and occasionally interferes with sexual performance. Perhaps the most recognized symptom is an increase in nocturnal urination, anything more than once a night being an important early warning sign. A medical exam and a prostate specific antigen test (PSA) is in order if you are over forty and exhibiting any of these symptoms.

What Causes BPH?

Presently there is no known cause that has gotten medicine’s attention, but pharmaceutically driven medicine isn’t that interested in finding causes anyway. There’s more money in treating symptoms. Interestingly enough, two strong contributing causes immediately come to my mind, probably because of my experience assisting in the treatment of prostate cancers during those years when cancer care was a major part of my practice.

First, The Ingestion Of Female Sex Hormones
The knowledge that estrogens, or phytoestrogens (estrogen mimics) play a considerable role in BPH has been recognized for some time in the alternative/complimentary medical community, and is well documented in the literature.

Research on soy products, a common source of phytoestrogens, demonstrated extremely early sexual development in children as well as estrogen receptor site problems in adults. Breast, ovary, uterus, and prostate tissues have an abundance of estrogen receptor sites and are therefore the most susceptible to the related problems. Some plastic degradation byproducts are also phytoestrogens that most of our population ingests daily from plastic water bottles and the plastic wrap around our foods. Many people still microwave their food in plastic containers, and that’s a huge mistake.

Another huge source of problems is the animal protein we consume. Most beef, pork, fowl, and fish that we get from huge agribusiness sources are fed antibiotics to keep them from infections while on un-natural diets that include immune system weakening steroids to stimulate rapid growth. Estrogens and phytoestrogens are steroids. Interestingly, the advent of epidemic BPH occurred concurrently with the rise of American agribusiness.

Second, The Inactivation Of Iodine/Iodide
Iodine/iodide is one of the primary preventive minerals in the prevention of breast, ovary, uterine, and prostate cancers as well as BPH. Adequate iodine/iodide in the diet, or by supplementation, will occupy the estrogen receptor sites on these estrogen sensitive tissues and not only reduce risk, but often completely reverse the inflammation resulting in the swelling and tenderness so often referred to as fibrocystic disease. Not only is our Standard American Diet (SAD, an appropriate acronym) deficient in iodine/iodide, chlorination and fluoridation of the drinking water further guarantees a population with an iodine/iodide deficiency. I have covered the simple high school chemistry explanation behind this phenomena in other newsletters.

Help, Naturally

Obviously, your first step is to eliminate, as much as possible, dietary sources of phytoestrogens and steroid hormone residues.

Changing the dietary intake to farm raised chickens (free range), grass fed and grass finished beef, and fresh caught fish from clean water sources (I’m not a big fan of “the other white meat”) usually shows an almost immediate improvement in the symptoms of BPH. Often, this change alone reduces nocturnal urination from four to six times a night to only once or twice.

An iodine/iodide patch test, entitled Iodine and Fibrocystic Disease, will teach you how to do an inexpensive home test for this critical nutrient. Then, if deficient, adequate supplementation will solve the iodine/iodide part of the problem.

Zinc is the second most important mineral for prostate health right behind iodine/iodide. A good test for the need for supplemental zinc is the presence of white spots on the fingernails. Forty to sixty mg of zinc a day is recommended for the elimination of the white spots. When the spots are gone the zinc supplement can be eliminated.

As inflammation plays a role in BPH, the anti-inflammatory Omega 3 unsaturated fatty acids are an important piece of the treatment puzzle. Your indicator of need for additional Omega 3 intake is dry skin between your ankles and your knees (shins). I have my patients take two Omega 3 supplements a day for two or three weeks, and if the shin skin is still very dry increase the dose by two. If in two or three week the shin skin is still dry, increase the dosage by two again. Some patients require ten or more Omega 3 supplements a day to experience healthy well lubricated skin, and a reduced inflammatory response.

Glandular or protomorphogen prostate is another supplemental approach. The prostate tissue comes from healthy Argentinean calf prostate. These animals are bred for their organs and tissues under careful environmentally controlled circumstances on the clean Argentinean pampas. The concept of “like treats like” goes back to ancient Greece and Hippocrates, the father of medicine. Some rather remarkable results have been experienced on this product at four to twelve tablets a day.

Saw Palmetto (Saw Grass) is an old American Indian remedy that is among the most effective. It has been compared to the most modern drugs in comparative studies, and seems to work as well without the side effects. The proper way to use Saw Palmetto is to start with a sufficient dose to quickly alter the symptom pattern. I suggest starting with eight a day in divided dosage, and as soon as the nocturnal urination is reduced sufficiently, or to one time a night, begin cutting the dosage until the minimum dose is found that maintains that level. I have had a few patients that have required an initial dose of twelve tablets a day before symptom reduction began. Once symptom improvement starts, dosage reduction is usually not far behind.
