The European model of "unacceptable until proven safe" has protected citizens from big business shenanigans, enhancing overall health and well-being across the continent. The American model of "safe until proven faulty" is killing us.

The European model of “unacceptable until proven safe” has protected citizens from big business shenanigans, enhancing overall health and well-being across the continent. The American model of “safe until proven faulty” is killing us.

I received an email video over the weekend from a friend in California. The topic was “why does the USA have the highest rate of cancer in the world?” The ideas on the video could be found in my newsletters that go back over ten or fifteen years, but I have never made my points so elegantly or persuasively. I highly recommend viewing this video, a TEDxTalks presentation by Robyn O’Brien.

Yes, eating genetically engineered veggies and the consumption of manufactured foods is behind the recent epidemic of allergies and asthma. It is also a major player in the USA having the highest cancer rate in the world, but is that the real problem? I think the real problem is regulation and the video makes a poignant argument for that fact. It doesn’t specifically mention companies like Dow and Monsanto, but it’s not too hard to figure out who the bad guys are.

In the Kansas City Star (Tuesday, June 21, 2011), a front page article gave one more example of that, and how dangerous our “safe until proven faulty” approach may become in the near future. The title of the article was “nuclear industry, regulators maintain cozy relationship.” The article gave clear examples of how the regulatory agencies that are in place to protect us are actually in bed with the very companies they are supposed to be protecting us from. Frankly, the article scared the hell out of me. I knew that there was danger from these nuclear plants, but I didn’t realize the degree.

Then on page A10, an editorial titles “Kansas failed citizens on Sunflower plant” told the same old story. So it doesn’t matter if the agency is federal, such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or the Food and Drug Agency, or the local Kansas Department of Health and Environment, we need to regulate the regulators. This should become a major election issue, and that can happen if we all communicate our concern to our legislatures.

Every day I go into the office and work with children and grandchildren who are so much sicker than kids were when I was in school. It’s heart wrenching, and it needs to stop. It can be stopped, one person at a time. Let’s do this. Please!

A new study of twins suggests that the environment, including conditions in the womb, may be at least as important as genes in causing autism.

This just proves that if you give science long enough it will sift through the politics of an issue and eventually reach an intelligent conclusion… and this is just the beginning. Joachim Hallmayer, an associate professor of psychiatry at Stanford University found an elevated risk of autism in children whose mothers took a popular type of antidepressant, so called SSRI’s like Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, and Lexapro, during the year before delivery.

It won’t be long before someone publishes a landmark study in a major peer reviewed journal finding a strong link between the aluminum/mercury dose in vaccines and autism. You can only hide a wolf in lamb’s clothing for so long.

Scientists at the University of California, Davis MIND Institute have determined that mothers who did not take prenatal vitamins were twice as likely to have an autistic child. Of course they are asking for further studies. If they had found a drug that would reduce the risk by half, every mother-to-be would be on that drug – ASAP.

We know that genetics plays a big role in autistic spectrum disorders, but our environment dictates which genes turn on and off so this research is no surprise to those of us who understand the genetics. The environment that we are referring too here is food, or more specifically, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals.

It has been my opinion, and the opinion of the scientific authorities who I listen to, that not only is the average American diet a disease producing disaster, but prescribed pre-natal vitamins are woefully inadequate.

I have had expectant moms under my care who all take additional supplementation in addition to their pre-natal vitamins, and I have never had one of my moms have a child with an autistic spectrum disorder. The research that supports these ideas has been around for over fifty years, and is readily available to anyone who is interested enough to review the literature.

If you talk to families who have an autistic child, it is not unusual for them to tell you that the autistic behavior didn’t start until shortly after a vaccination. Adequate nutrition through supplementation, especially during breast feeding, will also reduce risk. Optimum vitamin and mineral levels have been know for decades to help detoxify toxins and heavy metals, even the mercury associated with vaccines.

The most important of these supplements in my opinion is Vitamin C, and that is a story all by itself. I have written newsletters, most are listed on the Preventics Vitamin C-1000 page that you can access, if you are so inclined.

Dangers Of BBQ, What’s The Truth?

Lately, I’ve seen several articles about the dangers of BBQ. What’s the truth?

There is no question that cooking animal flesh over an open flame yields a meal loaded with carcinogens. Heterocyclic amines (HCA’s), caused by cooking meat over high heat, have been known to be a potential problem for as long as I have been in practice (a very long time).

I’m always fascinated by the majority of these articles because they don’t tell the whole truth. They just focus on making BBQ a bad guy.

In truth, most of us eat veggies and fruit along with our summer BBQ, and those foods are full of the antioxidant vitamins that protect us against HCA’s. Additionally, if you are receiving this newsletter you are undoubtedly smart enough to supplement your diet with additional vitamins and minerals, and these are the chemicals that protect us against these harmful HCA’s.

Undoubtedly, the most important protective antioxidant is Vitamin C, so don’t stop taking your Vitamin C during the warm BBQ season, it’s good for a lot more than thwarting the common cold.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are infections of the kidneys and urinary bladder. These infections are so common that there are TV commercials informing viewers of medications that they can ask their doctors and pharmacists about for relief. Usually antibiotics are involved to some degree, and in the vast majority of instances the culprit is a bacterium that is normally present in the large intestine, which is where it belongs. That bacterium is E. coli, but this is not the mutant E. coli that is associated with unsanitary food processing, but a normal inhabitant of our intestinal tract. Unfortunately, when it manages to get into our urinary tract it can cause lots of problems.

Lately, I have had an unusual number of patients with UTIs in my practice. It is unusual because most people think of an infection as a strictly medical problem requiring antibiotics, and therefore would not consult with a natural practitioner like myself. I guess word of mouth must be creating these referrals, because our results are usually excellent, and most of my patients have tried the medical approach, some for years and a few for decades. All my patients come with a medical diagnosis, but many women suffer with the urinary symptoms of itching, burning, feeling of fullness, need to urinate frequently and/or immediately and never seek medical help.

The problem is mostly found in women because of the nature of the anatomy, although occasionally it is found in men. If a husband or wife has E.coli they tend to pass it back and forth, so it’s best to treat both. I have seen women who experience a UTI after every menstrual cycle and who have been on antibiotics constantly or episodically for years; I have seen women who have been repeatedly hospitalized with UTIs; I have seen women who have UTIs after sex; and I have seen women who struggle at the job because of frequent urination, immediacy of urination, and the discomfort of sitting for protracted periods of time.

Imbalance is the problem. When the balance between the many competing microbial members of the intestinal tract is disturbed, bad things happen. Among the list of bad things we will find is Leaky Gut Syndrome (which most readers of this newsletter are familiar with because of experience with NAET) and UTIs. Most of these UTIs occur when E.coli migrate across the small space between anal opening and the urethra.

Unfortunately, antibiotic treatment not only eliminates the E.coli that’s causing the UTI, but also contributes to the imbalance in the gut microbial flora that started the problem in the first place contributing to even more UTIs in the future. That is why so many UTIs sufferers using antibiotics get better then worse, over and over again. The alternative to antibiotics for most common UTIs is a substance called D-Mannose. D-Mannose is an invert sugar. Our body isn’t designed to use it efficiently so when it is ingested it is rapidly excreted… and that is why it works as well as it does.

E.coli have finger like projections that actually stick to the wall of the bladder or kidney, so they are not easily washed away by urination. These projections on the E.coli have an affinity for D-Mannose, and when it is present in sufficient quantity it carries the E.coli out in the process of urination. D-Mannose, unlike antibiotics, doesn’t kill E.coli, it simply washes it away. Additionally, D-Mannose does not produce the side effect of antibiotics, in fact it doesn’t produce any at all. Because it is not readily metabolized by the body, D-Mannose is safe for diabetics, pregnant women, and even very small children.

The recommended dosage is on every bottle. In our office, I will muscle test for an exact doseage, and occasionally, it will be considerably higher than that recommended on the bottle, but if one takes the recommended doseage on the bottle, in time the E.coli infection will be gone. If taking D-Mannose does not eliminate the UTI, the chances that the UTI is caused by some other agent is good, and a different course of action should be pursued. About ten percent of UTIs are caused by something other than E.coli.

Preventics now carries D-Mannose. A bottle of 100, 300mg capsules, sells for $35.00. It is listed on our Price List under Specialty Products.

Here’s Protection for Your Family

I think it’s a shame how we always seem to learn how dangerous things are… after the fact. I remember DDT and Thalidomide, but if you’re younger you are probably focusing on more recent global problems like plastic. Government and big business are inseparable, it’s all about the economy, and you and I are expendable. If you expect to hear the truth from government or big business sources you are foolish.

That’s exactly what’s happening in Japan, and across the globe in the aftermath of this latest disaster. Our government agencies and news media, over the next weeks and months, will be assuring us that there is little or no danger to our families from the radio-active fallout from the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant. It’s in their best interest to do so. Unfortunately, it isn’t the truth. The damage won’t be immediate, but it will be cumulative.

Back when I was still in Healing Arts College, forty five years ago, our radiology instructor, on a regular basis, lectured us on the safety of X-rays. When asked what happened to the missing little finger on his left hand, he said that when he was a young doctor he would hold kids on the X-ray table so they wouldn’t move and blur the film. His hand received so much radiation because of this activity that one of his fingers had to be removed. It was immediately apparent to me that even educated people could be fools, and I have never owned an X-ray machine. If I needed an X-ray on a patient, I always let someone else take it.

As the years have gone by, there have been at least two World Council on Radiology conferences that come to memory. Both times we were told that the limits of radiation that had previously been considered safe, needed to be lowered. I have little doubt that this will happen again. For those of us living in the Kansas City area, a good example of government’s approach to safety in the workplace would be the mess at the Banister facility for the Atomic Energy Commission. They have been subjecting workers to toxic levels of Beryllium for years, and have been doing everything in their power to avoid responsibility for their employees illnesses.

There was a fallout problem after both Chernoble and Three Mile Island that affected the continent of North America, and we will experience the same from this accident in Japan. It will be in the medical journals within the next 24 months, but you won’t hear about it in the popular press. Radiation is dangerous enough that books have been written by authorities on medical radiology that clearly show the damage done by our cavalier use of X-rays and CAT scans.

How can you protect your family from this fallout? Iodide, particularly potassium iodide, blocks the thyroid gland from absorbing significant amounts of radioactive iodine from fallout. Preventics Iodine/Iodide Complex contains 2.5 mg of potassium iodide along with sodium iodide and molecular iodine. The adult dose is one pill a day, for children between 50 and 100 pounds, the dose would be 1/2 a capsule a day, and for children who weigh less than 50 pounds, the dose would be 1/4 capsule a day. We can expect it to take at least two years for the atmosphere to cleanse itself, so my recommendation is to continue this regimen for at least that length of time.

I placed an extra order for our Iodine/Iodide supplement the other day and the manufacturer was already having trouble meeting the increased demand.

Patient Feedback Stimulates A Review

In the last month I have had two patients comment on energy and CoQ10. One lady was one of my recovered breast cancer patients and the other was a patient that carries a familial risk in that area. They were both on physiological doses of CoQ10, when for various reasons they discontinued it for a period of a few months. In retrospect, they both said that they had noticeably more fatigue in that time frame, and when they restarted their CoQ10 supplementation they noticed revitalization, a very noticeable improvement in overall energy.

Research Confirms A Connection

These patient experiences are important, and in keeping with findings by the Karolinska Institute in breast cancer research. Many years ago they found that when physiological doses of CoQ10 were added to a comprehensive supplemental program for terminal breast cancer patients, an unexpected number of them went into sustained remission, and in the remainder, the cancer progression was appreciably reduced. So now let me tie the two together so it makes sense. Later we can talk about CoQ10′s role in the areas of increased energy, heart health, anti-oxidant activity, skin health, dosage, and some meds that interfere with CoQ10 production.

CoQ10, Cancer Physiology And Energy Production

Healthy cells fulfill their energy requirements via oxidative Phosphorylation, or the use of oxygen. CoQ10, as an electron donor, plays a major role in the process. When cells can’t make sufficient energy using oxygen, they switch to making energy by ‘burning’ sugar. It’s called glycolysis. If a cell makes its energy via glycolysis for a protracted period, that cell becomes confused and begins to function disharmoniously with the surrounding cells. If that continues long enough, the risk of genetic aberration and cancer increases exponentially. This was first published in the early part of the last century by Otto Warburg, M.D., Ph.D., so it isn’t new information. What is new information is the research by Professor Brian Peskin (google Brian Peskin and prepare to get excited) explaining why cells most commonly switch from oxidative energy production to the burning of sugar (glycolysis). Obviously, we want to keep our cells using oxygen, and CoQ10 helps the body do that.

President Nixon’s “War on Cancer” was lost a long time ago, which is why you don’t hear about it any more. With cancer, the obvious approach to reduced the numbers has to be prevention, and anything that reduces cells switching their energy production to glycolysis is a big step in the right direction.

How Do You Know If You Need It?

As we age we make less CoQ10. It starts to decline in our twenties, and many people are functioning at critically low levels by the time they are in their 50′s. I take a bottle of CoQ10 (100mg per pill) every year to see if I can notice an increase in energy, and I haven’t yet. The original research suggested that you should be able to tell the difference if you took a 30 mg pill of CoQ10 a day for a month, but the latest research suggests that the proper test dosage is 100mg a day. The lay literature is suggesting everyone over 30 needs to supplement with CoQ10, but I don’t support that position. I have numerous patients in their 30′s and 40′s who notice energy increases when they take 100mg of CoQ10 every day, but I also have numerous patients who are in their 50′s and 60′s who test themselves regularly and appear to not need it yet, myself included. Of course, as the body ages, needs change, so eventually we will all benefit from supplementing CoQ10, but why spend money supplementing CoQ10 if you don’t need it yet?

Let’s Not Forget CoQ10 And The Heart

Initially, CoQ10 was lauded for its role in cellular respiration, and because the heart uses more energy than other organs the thrust of research was in the cardiovascular direction with emphasis on increased energy production. Use of CoQ10 in heart disease, especially congestive heart failure, has been routine in Japan for over a decade. Most of the CoQ10 research has been done overseas, and American M.D.’s tend to overlook it because it wasn’t done here, however, that seems to be changing with time. My dearest friend, who recently passed away, couldn’t walk from a restaurant to the car without stressing his heart, but after taking CoQ10 he could walk around the block with no problems at all. For those with congestive heart failure it can be a miracle pill.

The Most Recent Findings

The latest truly important research with CoQ10 is the discovery of its neuro-protective role in Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, Freidreich’s ataxia, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). A lesser discovery is CoQ10′s ability to protect skin from oxidative damage, and it is now found in many natural skin care products such as wrinkle defense creams and skin toners.

Impaired Production

A big problem with CoQ10 is that its production is hampered by certain medications, most notably the Statin drugs used for lowering cholesterol. It is imperative that everyone taking Statins must additionally supplement CoQ10. A number of cardiologists have written books on this subject but mainline cardiologists have been slow to respond. Birth control pills can also block the production of CoQ10, so young women taking those pills and experiencing fatigue should try supplementing with CoQ10 to see if it makes a difference.

Quality CoQ10

As more supplements are made in Asia, quality becomes a question that should be on every purchasers mind. There is no good cheap CoQ10. That’s unfortunate, but true. Preventics professional quality CoQ10, 100mg, normally sells for $66.00 for 30 capsules. We discount them to $33.00 a bottle to make them more affordable.

I never cease to be amazed at how the media chooses experts to quote who represent businesses whose best interests lie in bamboozeling the public concerning vaccines that still use toxic mercury and aluminum as preservatives.

The media is at it again. On January 10, 2011, the article of mention in the Kansas City Star was entitled Study: Birth Spacing May Affect Autism. It suggested that children born less than two years apart have a higher risk of autism. It also suggested that perhaps it was due to the depletion of the mothers nutrients by the first child. Dr. Bearman, the primary author, was “shocked” by the results. He wouldn’t have been if he’d been familiar with prior science. Additionally, his research takes the heat off vaccination as a major cause of autism. Now it’s the fault of families that don’t adequately space births. I wonder who paid for this junk research? Would you be surprised if it was a vaccine manufacturer?

I never cease to be amazed at how the media chooses experts to quote who represent businesses whose best interests lie in bamboozeling the public. Just a couple of weeks ago a major story in the Kansas City Star de-bunked the vaccination/autism connection, and especially the British research published in 1998 that validated the connection. One of the reasons given for the invalidation of that and numerous other papers regarding this issue was the questionable health of the children studied who appear to have become autistic after vaccination. What difference does it make? Are only healthy children vaccinated? Are all children thoroughly screened for familial health risks and carefully physically examined before each vaccination? Are the makers of the vaccines that still use toxic mercury and aluminum as preservatives looking out for themselves and their profit, or the children? Let’s take a quick look at the facts.

Do really healthy kids from healthy families get reactions to the vaccines? No they don’t, at least not immediately noticeable ones. Maybe decades down the road of life, increased mercury and/or aluminum body burden will contribute to poor academic performance, miscarriage, dementia or cancer. An increased body burden of both of these heavy metals has been implicated in those and a myriad of other terrible conditions, and we continue to load our environment with both. If we warn pregnant women not to eat fish in order to avoid poisoning the fetus with mercury, why is mercury safe when injected in much greater quantities in a vaccination? Simple, it’s good for business. Likewise, if aluminum intake is directly related to Alzheimers Dementia, and it is, why aren’t people who drink beer and other beverages from aluminum cans apprised of the risks? Same answer, it would be bad for business to tell the truth.

Children today are raised in an increasingly more toxic environment. They live in dwellings built from man made materials, and they all off-gas toxic fumes for months or years. These gases are heavy and settle to the floor, so even when most adults aren’t bothered, the kids are crawling around in an invisible cloud of toxic gas. Kids today have more colds, ear aches, allergies, and minor infections, and more severe diseases as well. Anyone with an education and a lick of sense realizes that. And it seems like every ten years or so we come up with another vaccination to poison them with.

More than fifty years ago, Roger Williams, Ph.D., of the Clayton Foundation of the University of Texas, published numerous studies on nutrition, health, and disease. In his lectures he was fond of telling the story of how mothers that he studied, who had large families, began having health problems after 2.3 children, and that from the third child on, each child had more and more health problems. He liked to kid about statistics, and how he had never really met a woman who had three tenths of a child, but his points were well made.

It takes genuine replacement parts to heal an unhealthy body. It takes genuine replacement parts to build a healthy human being. In this country, most people eat from packages and cans. Manufactured foods do not contain natural, healthy, genuine replacement parts, and since the advent of manufactured foods we have become a nation of unhealthy people. The literature tells us that it has definitely affected morbidity (quality of life), and now for the first time the literature tells us that it is starting to affect mortality… for instance, this is the first generation that is not expected to live as long as the previous generation.

Have you been in a maternity ward lately and observed the general health of the expectant mothers? Does it take science fifty years to read its own literature, observe the situation and figure it out? Have you seen what hospitals feed their patients? It’s a travesty. For Heaven’s sake, there’s a McDonalds at Truman Medical Center in downtown Kansas City. What does that say about the mentality of the local medical community? Does it actually suggest that medical authorities think McDonalds fast food provides genuine replacement parts?

Vaccinations are contributing to autism. Any parent who has watched a behaviorally normal child slide into autistic behavior after a vaccination knows that. I have had too many parents relate that story to me in my practice, and my patients’ parents are capable and caring observers.

Facts:

family health in our country has declined;

children are being given ever increasing numbers of vaccinations preserved with toxic heavy metals (aluminum and mercury);

children with poor health histories, colds, etc., are being vaccinated without being appropriately screened as a high risk;

the medical/pharmaceutical industrial complex is protecting its reputation and profits; and

the media has fallen in line as usual.

I am delighted to tell you that even though it was a long time in coming, a few people have reviewed the literature and written books that are both informative and more than a little scary.

The first is Zapped, Why Your Cell Phone Shouldn’t Be Your Alarm Clock and 1,268 ways to Outsmart the Hazards of Electronic Pollution, by Ann Louise Gittleman. I think that is the easiest read and the least threatening.

The second is entitled Disconnect, The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family, by Devra Davis. This is the more scientifically written and investigated report of the dangers by a more credentialed author, but it might just scare you into the New Year.

Wireless companies are now offering advice on safety as well. Now that covering up the research has become impossible, they’re soft pedaling the danger. At least that’s a start.

Some time ago, at Duke University, some oncologists (cancer specialists) decided to experiment with genetically altered yellow laboratory agouti mice, specifically raised because they genetically pass cancer on to their young. These mice are used for cancer research in medical labs.

The scientists decided to see what would happen if they fed the rats some vitamins, specifically a mixture of B-vitamins – the same kind as found in a professional quality multiple vitamin. One of the scientists, Randy Jirtle, thought it “both eerie and scary” to observe the newborn mice. The young looked different from their parents. They were lean, brown and healthy.

This experiment helped to change science’s view of the influence of the environment and opened a new way of viewing genetics due to “epigenetic change.” This means that genes express themselves according to their environment, i.e., genetic change. A person changes their genes (turning them on and off) by changing the environment surrounding them – that is, by altering what they eat, drink, and do.

It is now realized that there are approximately 600 enzymes that need vitamins and minerals to function properly. Research has shown that defective enzyme genes are repairable with a higher dose of the proper vitamin or mineral.

Could there be a better reason to eat locally and organically and take professional quality supplements? I don’t think so.
