In parts of rural Africa lacking electricity, there is nearly a complete absence of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). This is what we know so far...

In parts of rural Africa lacking electricity, there is nearly a complete absence of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).

This is what we know so far. Electric lights result in decreased production of melatonin, a necessary brain chemical, and greater vulnerability to oxidative injury and AD. It is very important to sleep in a dark room. All sleep deprivation affects melatonin production and therefore increases the risk of AD.

Aluminum, like other metals, directly increases the production of free radicals that can and do damage the delicate myelin sheath of nervous tissue. There is a 250% increase risk of AD in people drinking municipal water high in aluminum content for more than ten years. Much municipal drinking water in North America is treated with alum (aluminum) to purify it and aluminum fluoride to prevent cavities. That’s why I have Mountain Valley Water in both my practice and my home. Characteristic brain AD lesions contain very high levels of aluminum.

Mercury is another chemical of concern, and studies show that mercury levels continue to escalate. Mercury is now found in most fish, but bigger problems come from silver dental fillings (mostly mercury). Additionally, consider that the average child receives 35 vaccines, and most of them contain thimerosol (mercury). Unfortunately, science has demonstrated that when both these toxic chemical are found together as they are in AD, the combination, due to synergy, is many times more toxic than we would expect.

Electromagnetic waves are also a culprit. Electricians, machinists, machine operators, seamstresses, sewing factory workers, sheet metal workers, typists, key punch operators, welders, and machine shop workers have a four times greater risk of acquiring AD. This study was done over twenty years ago. What would we find today when we add to that list the users of personal and business computers, cell phones, electric blankets, clock radios near the head when sleeping, and users of hair dryers. Fortunately, most of these risks are modifiable.

The gene primarily incriminated in AD is APOE4; however, the disease only occurs when there is a favorable environment. Again, the disease only occurs when there is a favorable environment.

A good test for AD risk is serum homocysteine. There is a 200% increased risk of AD in people with elevated homocysteine levels. Elevated homocysteine is related to a nutritional deficiency of the B-complex family. Serum homocysteine is a simple test that any doctor can order on patient request. Supplementation with B vitamins restores serum homocysteine to normal levels and reduces the risk to AD. Glyco-B is the Preventics B vitamin product along with Glyco Min.

The tide of public awareness is drowning Aspartame (nutrasweet) and its makers. One producer, Chicago’s Merisant, recently went bankrupt and Holland Sweetener, Europe’s largest aspartame producer terminated its operations in 2006.

European Food Safety Authorities include “experts” financially linked to nutrasweet, but the pressure is so great that the changes continue to happen. There is no longer any question that these artificial sweeteners cause cancer. In fact it is fair to think of artificially sweetened soft drinks as formaldehyde cocktails. Oh, and for the record, Searle, the original manufacturer parent holder of Aspartame is a subsidiary of Monsanto.

“Just as the heavy use of antibiotics contributed to the rise of drug resistant supergerms, American farmers’ near ubiquitous use of the weed killer Roundup has led to the rapid growth of tenacious new superweeds.”

This results in the use of more and more toxic herbicide, more agricultural runoff, more stream and lake pollution, and a greater health risk for you and your children. Roundup (glyphosate) is dangerous. I have warned about Monsanto, and the use of glyphosate and genetically modified crops for years.

Buy local, and feed your family organically grown food whenever possible — it’s a matter of life and health.

Well, it turned out to be a group of pesticides. The subject merited mention because honey bees pollinate a huge portion of the worlds food crops.

A Year or two ago I wrote about the problems with the honey bees new disease called Colony Collapse Disorder. Scientists were blaming it on everything from cell phone signals to pesticides, and to a virus. Well, it turned out to be a group of pesticides manufactured by Bayer Crop Science, a division of the giant German Pharmaceutical giant Bayer. The subject merited mention because honey bees pollinate a huge portion of the worlds food crops.

It turns out that Bayer has been suppressing information for the last decade that their pesticides in the class of neonicotinoids have been killing the bees. The European Union has submitted a letter of concern and wants the pesticide banned, while France and Germany have already banned these chemicals.

You might wish to avoid this class of toxic chemicals to protect the health of your family and your family pets. Here is a list of most of the neonicotinoids most commonly found in use here:

Imidacloprid (Admire, Advantage, Antarc, Chinook, Confidor, Gaucho, Hachikusan, Kochinor, Premise, Prothor, Winner)

Clothianidin (Arena, Belay, Clutch, Gaucho, Poncho, Titan)

Acetamiprid (Adjust, Assail, Intruder)

Thiamethoxam (Actara, Centric, Cruiser, Helix, Platinum)

Bayer puts profits first, just like Monsanto and Dow and the other Multi-national Pharmaceutical/Chemical giants. Their list of offenses goes on and on. By threatening the honey bee population Bayer created a major threat to the world’s food supply, realized the damage they were causing, and continued sales of their pesticides anyway in the name of profit, estimated at $1.25 billion from these products.

For some time, environmental and health advocates have been asking is it really by accident that most pharmaceutical companies also manufacture pesticides, and how much do they profit by the illness suffered by individuals exposed to these toxic chemicals in both the home and workplace? I think you all know my sentiments regarding these subjects, but when the New England Journal of Medicine published an article last year stating that this generation of Americans will be the first generation to live shorter lives that the previous generation it becomes evident that these toxins impact on our overall body burden is doing some serious damage, and that’s strictly from the position of mortality. What about morbidity, and the overall decline in health over the last fifty years that corresponds with the increase in man made chemicals in our environment, and what percentage of that decline can be reasonably blamed on these chemicals? Unfortunately, the bigger these Multi-National corporations get, the less likely they are to accept responsibility.

Germany, Switzerland, Israel, the U.K., France, and Finland are all recommending limited exposure, especially for children. The data that's ringing the alarm is of increased cancer of the brain, head, and neck of frequent cell phone users.

The evidence was in on cigarettes, but the warning label took decades. Millions have died from tobacco’s side effects. The evidence on Trans Fatty Acids is decades old, but only recently have labels identified these dangerous man made fats. Millions have died from the cancer and heart disease contributed too by these toxic fats. I think the next consumer-shaking warning label will be on cell phones. Lawmakers in Maine are considering just that.

Germany, Switzerland, Israel, the U.K., France, and Finland are all recommending limited exposure, especially for children. The data that’s ringing the alarm is of increased cancer of the brain, head, and neck of frequent cell phone users. Naturally, the data is inconsistent. The studies by the cell phone industry suggest they are safe; however, the independent studies show “substantial increased risks.” How often have we seen that? The agencies that assign risk and are mandated to protect the public, that’s you and I, are often influenced to the point of control by the very mega-companies that they are supposed to be regulating. That’s why it takes decades for most citizens to learn of the dangers that surround us masquerading as safe.

Because a child’s nervous system is still developing, it is reasonable that they would be more vulnerable to the potential damages now being associated with these devices. Should you stop using your cell phone? I don’t think so. Should we use them prudently and make sure our children aren’t “living on their phones,” I think so. I am continually amazed by the number of people who are unable to operate a motor vehicle unless they have a cell phone to their ear. I’ll bet you’ve noticed that too. So cell phones can lead to your death in many ways.

Critics of the caesarean section rate claim that the procedure is exposing women and babies to the risks of major surgery. Advocates for Caesarean Sections attribute the increase in number to fertility treatments, poorer physical health of mothers, and more older women giving birth.

Actually, to find the answer, just follow the money. First, hospitals make a lot more money from a Caesarean delivery, and then from post delivery care when mothers are more frequently back in the hospital and babies more frequently in an intensive care unit. Does anyone out there think these big hospital chains aren’t in it for the profit??? Next, consider the often sued Obstetrician. They have learned that if a baby dies the chance of being sued is good; however, if a mother dies from complications of a caesarean section and the baby lives, the father rarely sues.

Unfortunately, risk to the mother increases with each subsequent Caesarean because the surgery raises the odds that the uterus will rupture in the next pregnancy.

This is information from CBC News – Technology & Science – Feb. 26th of this year entitled Old Mice Run Faster with Supplements.

Researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, have developed a cocktail of 30 dietary supplements such as the B vitamins, etc., that counteract the symptoms of aging. The mice live 10% longer, are twice as active as normal, and seem to get smarter.

The experiment was prompted by research that showed single vitamin supplements didn’t seem to make a big difference, and the researchers wondered if mixing the ingredients might improve the results. Of course, this is what most intelligent nutritionists have insisted for decades… supplements work together as a team to produce their effects.

When researchers examined the animals’ brains, they found the cells were generating fewer of the free radicals that cause aging, evidence that shows the supplements make a difference. The team is now using crickets to try to figure out what role each of the 30 ingredients plays. So far, crickets that were fed the supplements have double their normal life span.

Dr. Pauling's reputation as a recipient of two Nobel prizes prompted me to head for the library at the local medical school to look up the available research on Vitamin C. This is what I found.

How I discovered the importance of Vitamin C

One of the most memorable experiences of my life occurred back in the 1980s, when I was on the board of directors of the International Academy of Preventive Medicine. I was at a meeting in Chicago, and skipped a lecture that I had heard at a previous seminar. When I walked into the hospitality suite reserved for board members and speakers I found myself alone with Dr. Linus Pauling. A conversation ensued that would change my life.

When he discovered that I was a Chiropractor, Dr. Pauling told me that in his opinion the Chiropractic premise of the spinal misalignment didn’t go far enough. He suggested that before the misalignment could exist, a sprain/strain syndrome must occur at the musculo-ligamentous support for any specific joint(s). This is not what someone wants to hear who has invested a huge amount of time and money in a pre-med and Chiropractic education. He spoke to me of Vitamin C and its relationship to detoxification, immunity, sprain/strain repair and aging. The information on sprain/strain repair and aging was all new to me and I had some serious doubts. However, Dr. Pauling’s reputation as a recipient of two Nobel prizes prompted me to respectfully hold my tongue.

Upon arriving home, I immediately headed for the library at the local medical school to look up the available research on Vitamin C. This is what I found.

Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant and detoxifier

Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant, and it is stored in small amounts in the liver and adrenal cortex. One of its many functions is the reactivation of Vitamin E. In the presence of adequate Vitamin C, Vitamin E is able to be used over and over. Vitamin C also plays a large roll in carrying various heavy metal poisons like lead and mercury out of the body. In inner city children, where testing has shown that the toxic body burden of these poisonous heavy metals is often perilously high and significantly effects I.Q. and life expectancy, Vitamin C can be a virtual lifesaver.

Vitamin C is an immune system booster

Vitamin C has been shown to increase the effectiveness of white blood cell function. White blood cells (WBC’s) are the policemen of the body. To simplify a complicated chemical interaction, it is safe to say that they “beat up” invading germs to keep us from infections. Vitamin C potentizes WBC’s to the extent that when adequate Vitamin C is taken, the body will automatically reduce the WBC’s it makes because it can then do a better job with fewer WBC’s.. Now that’s efficiency. Vitamin C is also important in the manufacture of anti-stress hormones that are so important when the body is under stress from infection or environmental pollution. In fact, it is so important to the manufacture of these hormones that Vitamin C is stored in the actual adrenal glands that make these hormones.

Vitamin C and sprains and strains

Sprains and strains occur when ligaments (they hold bone to bone), and tendons (they hold muscle to bone), are torn or damaged. A subluxation is a sprain/strain injury between two vertebrae (bones of the back). A common complaint about Chiropractic care is that it takes so many adjustments or manipulations to fix a problem. When I started using Dr. Pauling’s advice about supplementing my chiropractic patients with Vitamin C, I reduced the number of office visits needed to fix the average back, hip, shoulder, etc., problem to between two and three. Although my income was initially reduced, it was soon more than made up for by referrals from happy patients. If you utilize Chiropractic care, it is possible to save yourself a fortune in office visits by simply supplementing with adequate Vitamin C.

The mechanism of action for healing sprain/strains and anti-aging are the same

Vitamin C is a major component of collagen. Collagen is the basic building block of connective tissue. Connective tissue holds the other tissues of the body together. Some connective tissue is relatively inelastic while some is very elastic. Tissues that need stretchability usually have more of the elastic type. When the body has inadequate Vitamin C, sprains/strains repair very slowly. As we get older and our ability to absorb Vitamin C is compromised by the aging process, not only do sprains and strains heal more slowly, but all connective tissue repair is compromised. When that happens, we virtually disconnect and one of the signs of that is drooping and sagging skin. Aging can’t be stopped by taking Vitamin C, but it can sure be slowed.

Why isn’t there enough Vitamin C to keep us healing quickly and looking young?

Scientists have discovered that virtually all animals make copious amounts of Vitamin C. The exceptions are guinea pigs, the South American bubal bat, some species of new world monkeys, and man. Thousands of years ago, a genetic glitch took place and mankind completely lost its’ ability to make Vitamin C. The mechanism to make Vitamin C from glycogen (storage sugar), is intact in our livers with the exception of the last enzyme in the chain (l-gulunolactone oxidase). Interestingly, animals that make the most Vitamin C have the least cancer, the least overall illness, and they age the most slowly. This inability to make Vitamin C is an important part of why humans age faster than practically all the other animals on the planet. Supplementation is the only solution.

How much Vitamin C is enough?

Medicine hasn’t been much help determining optimum Vitamin C amounts because it is primarily concerned with the amount needed to keep from dying of scurvy (the disease associated with Vitamin C deficiency). There’s a huge difference between the amount needed to avoid scurvy and the amount needed for optimum health. Linus Pauling suggested that we use the amount of Vitamin C made by other primates that do make their own Vitamin C as a reasonable amount for optimum health. The recommended daily amount (RDA) for Vitamin C (the amount needed to avoid scurvy), is 30 mg. Primates that make their own Vitamin C make about 1000mgs (1 gm) of Vitamin C for every 50 pounds of body weight. That would mean that a 150 pound chimpanzee would make approximately 3000mgs (3 gms) of Vitamin C a day when under low to moderate stress. When heavily stressed, the amount of Vitamin C manufactured can quadruple.

In my practice, I have recommended a gram of Vitamin C for every 50 pounds of weight for over thirty-five years.

Do certain things increase the need for Vitamin C?

Unfortunately, Vitamin C needs increase when we are confronted with a hostile chemical environment, e.g., pollution from chemical dumping; preservatives, hormones, and antibiotics that are added to our food; off-gassing of modern building materials and carpeting; airborne agribusiness chemicals used by farmers; first or second hand tobacco smoke; etc. To use tobacco smoke as an example, the average smoker needs approximately 600mgs of Vitamin C just to detoxify a pack of cigarettes. Remember now, the RDA is only 30 mgs. I have been called a megascorbic practitioner, but given the scientific information available in the literature, I think my recommendations are on the conservative side.

How much Vitamin C is too much?

Just over two decades ago, a very famous orthopedic surgeon named Robert Cathcart became interested in Vitamin C when he noticed that when his patients were given large doses before and after surgery, their expected fatality rate dropped to almost non existent, and they healed at a much faster rate. Dr. Cathcart wondered if Vitamin C needs differed greatly from person to person, so he embarked on a few research trials. What he found was that when you give a patient more Vitamin C than they can use, they stop absorbing it. It then becomes an irritant to the large intestine and causes diarrhea. He called that the Cathcart point, or bowel recognition. He also found that some of his patients reached bowel recognition on as little as 5 or 6gms of Vitamin C per day, and that some needed 50 or 60gms to reach the same recognition, a ten fold difference. He also found that his patience healed significantly faster when they were supplementing with Vitamin C just below the point of bowel recognition. Other than diarrhea, no other side effects have been attributed to megadosing Vitamin C.

Does Vitamin C quality differ?

Unfortunately, most Vitamin C on the market is ascorbic acid. It is cheap, irritates the stomach, and is not found in this form in nature. Nature buffers ascorbic acid with minerals, which makes it gentle to the stomach and intestinal tract. Nature also supplies Vitamin C as a member of a group or family called the bioflavonoids, along with other members of that family. The correct ratio is controversial, but is generally thought to be about 10% bioflavonoids. Vitamin C can be made from almost any source of sugar. The technology involved in making Vitamin C in pill form is universal, and everyone uses the same technology. Some companies use only the best ingredients. The companies that sell exclusively to physicians are among those companies. An example of quality Vitamin C that can be purchased in a health food store would be “Ester C.” It is the most advertised Vitamin C product on the market. Preventics Vitamin C 1000 is the equivalent of “Ester C,” and because you buy Preventics Vitamin C1000 at wholesale you save over $30.00 a bottle.

Are there circumstances where we need more Vitamin C?

When my patients are seriously acutely or chronically ill, I will often recommend they take their Vitamin C levels up to bowel recognition. I suggest they do this by taking it with meals, and by increasing one pill per meal each day until recognition is reached. At this point, the Vitamin C is reduced somewhat, which depends on the dose at which recognition occurred, and continued at the reduced dose until recognition occurs again. This is continued until wellness is achieved or it is determined that it is time to go back to maintenance dosage. This is not something I recommend people try on their own, and is why we have a Health Help Hotline for our customers.

I have been railing against factory farming for the last thirty years, telling my patients and Vitamin Customers of the dangers I foresaw from the many unsound practices of the participating farms. Among those practices that I saw as being dangerous to consumer health was the massing together of huge numbers of animals in unnatural and unhealthy environments that promote disease, and therefore require aggressive preventive measures such as blanket antibiotic administration. In time, blanket antibiotic administration to these huge herds, flocks, etc. in theory had to lead to resistant strains of microorganisms… and that’s exactly what has happened… and nobody wants to take responsibility for the disaster.

On Feb. 9 of this year, Katie Couric of CBS investigated the overuse of antibiotics in livestock and some of the ramifications. In the investigation, a University of Iowa study was featured that found a brand new strain of MRSA (Methacillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). The hog study found MRSA in 70% of the animals and 64% of the workers. Several farms in Iowa and Western Illinois were studied. All of the farms with MRSA were factory farms and all used antibiotics routinely. On antibiotic free farms that were not factory farms, no MRSA was found.

Most of us don’t think much about MRSA, and when we do we think of hospital related infections and perhaps the occasional case of an athletic locker room case of transmission, but beware. Our government is once again involved in covering up the enormity of a problem it should have controlled with more careful inspections decades ago. Drug resistant infections killed over 70,000 Americans last year. That’s more deaths than from AIDS, and we can characterize this as an “emerging health crisis” like CBS did or call it what it is, which is an epidemic.

I have advised buying meat and poultry from smaller organically oriented farms for decades for these very reasons. Unfortunately, antibiotic resistant strains like MRSA can spread in many ways. It’s a matter of time before it’s in the food chain (if it isn’t already), and it can even be in the water runoff from a farm, and/or in the air. Things can happen very quickly with these deadly antibiotic resistant bacterial strains, which is why this factory farming practice and flagrant use of antibiotics has to be stopped.

Unfortunately, as long as the Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex is making a fortune providing these antibiotics, the government agencies that they tend to control will not be responsive to the public’s needs. It is unfortunate that the government agencies that were put in place to protect us have been manipulated by the very businesses that they were to supposed to protect us against, but that’s politics for you. You can begin to change this with your vote and your pocket book at the super market.

We can’t have it both ways… safe food and cheap food. I’ll vote for safe, and I hope you resolve to do the same for the sake of our children and grandchildren.

It is customary in our society to expect mental decline in old age, however, a close look at history tells us that we are wrong in our expectation. As our natural foods have become less and less nourishing because of agribusiness farming practices that increase profits for the farmer with little concern for the consumer along with an enormous increased consumption of man-made/processed/manufactured foods, we as a nation have noticed this increase in mental decline, and I do not believe it is limited to old age.

A big part of this problem is the elimination and/or reduction of naturally occurring B vitamins in our daily intake. The studies have been done that implicate sub-clinical as well as clinical B vitamin deficiency in cases of dementia and cognitive impairment. They show that participants who have the lowest serum levels and tissue levels of B vitamins have the greatest cognitive challenges. A very helpful marker is most often used by Cardiologists to determine cardiovascular disease (CVD), the serum homocysteine test. The higher your serum homocysteine test numbers, the greater your risk of both CVD and cognitive decline.

The B vitamins can be found in healthy quantities in green leafy vegetables, beans, and eggs, especially if they are fresh and organic. Unfortunately, the B vitamin family is water soluble and denatures quickly, so freshness is essential. Here in the Midwest, that’s less critical than in New York City, where produce is usually at least two weeks old by the time it gets to the consumer and a lot of nutrition is lost in those two weeks.

Aging studies continue to be performed which consistently show B vitamin levels drop as we age, and that is definitely a part of the fatigue, depression, and cognitive impairment of old age. As one might expect, the B vitamins tend to be deficient as a group, even though the emphasis has been on B-6 (pyridoxine), B-9 (folic acid), and B-12 (cyanocobalamin), when these are lacking we usually find that the whole B family is less than it should be; so it should come as no surprise that the body of evidence clearly demonstrates that B vitamin nutritional status is critical to both the development and preservation of mental capacities throughout life.

Preventics Glyco Min and Preventics Glyco B are both excellent sources of the B vitamin family in a balanced form. In cases of fatigue and/or cognitive impairment, one per meal can often produce pleasant improvement. I suggest a clinical trial of two bottles of Glyco B. If no changes are forthcoming I consider the trial a failure and discontinue the supplement.
